Round 17 - Norisring: REECCS joins the RWRS?

In a first for any series without "RWRS" anywhere in the series' acronym, the REECCS played a supporting role to the F1RWRS at the Norisring. This meant that quite a few drivers had "double duty" for the weekend, including Frank Zimmer, James Davies, Ben Fleet, Kay Lon, Daniel Melrose, Dean O'Lauchlan, Jason Hamilton, Laurent Seron, Wouter Lamberigts, Niko Bellic and Sebastian Groves, who wasn't expected to race after being sacked, but replacement driver Jari Kekkonen didn't turn up, leaving ArrowTech to reluctantly put Groves back in the Moskvitch.

Dave Simpson's cousin, Rick Simpson had his first run in the REECCS, running the Simpson's new Lada that was originally going to debut at Bathurst. He surprised everyone with 3rd on the grid, behind Maxim Simonov and Frank Montana.

The race was eventful to say the least, despite the fact that the drivers were told to behave in front of the F1RWRS officials, which most did, even the Trabants didn't roll over too much. However, what this race lacked in crazy rollover action it gained in spectacular driving from everyone in the huge lead group. Simonov lead for a while, before being passed by Rick Simpson fairly early on. Simpson lead for a while, until Montana passed him at the turn 1 hairpin. Then it was the turn of... (wait for it)... Sebastian Groves. Yes, the driver who was meant to be sacked was now in the lead of the race, and was using the acceleration of the Moskvitch out of the hairpins to his advantage, however the Lada's would catch back up under braking. Groves led until the last corner, where Simonov put one of the boldest moves I've seen to take the lead... only to understeer into the wall on the exit. Groves regained the lead and took thw win, while Frank Montana got past Simonov as well, to take second.

If you haven't nominated a second driver for the enduros by next Friday then I'll place a driver there myself (most likely one of your drivers from another series).
I'm going to be bringing back the awards and penalties for the enduros - these will be given out after each race and will go towards the drivers pointscore, not the teams pointscore. (so, if driver 1 wins IIDOTR, and driver 2 does bathplug all, only driver 1 will score the IIDOTR points). Feel free to nominate your own awards - the best will be added to the list. The awards/penalties are:

  • Master of Disaster (awarded to the most chaotic driver): 5 points
  • Look Ma, No Wheels! (awarded to any car that loses a wheel) 2 points for a wheel, 10 for all four
  • Lolwut? (awarded to anyone who causes an incident that makes me say Lolwut?): 3 points
  • Got beaten by a Trabant on a road course: -3 points
  • The Bradbury Award (awarded to anyone who wins a race after everyone in front of them crashes): 7 points
  • Reject of the Race: -5 points
  • Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race: 5 points
  • Deadbeat Team-mate of the Race: -4 points (only awarded after race 2)
  • The Daniel Melrose Award: (Awarded to someone who performs well for the first half of the race only to simply disappear off a cliff after that point): 25 second penalty
  • The "That's not gone well" award: (Exactly what it says on the tin): The Top Gear Golden Cock and -1 point.
  • Fire in the hole (awarded to any car that catches on fire): 2 points + a free fire extinguisher
  • I forgot my GPS (awarded to anyone who gets lost): -2 points + a track map
  • Brand loyalty (awarded to the top 3 finishers for each brand of car): 1st - 5pts, 2nd - 3pts, 3rd - 1pt
  • Coulthard award (awarded to anyone who crashes in the pits): 2 pts + a free "greatest Murray Walker Quotes" CD

There will be a change in my lineup for the enduro, Pieter Kickert will be replaced by Ryan Zimmer in the #39.

You need an extra driver per car. So you'd need to chose whether Senerson and Mortarhouse will share your lead car, with two enduro drivers in your second car, or have the regular drivers in their regular cars partnered by an enduro driver each. Basically, you have to choose who Tristan Jung is going to be partnering, or who will join Jung in a second car.

There's still two drivers who don't have a co-driver at the moment - HWNSNBM and Kristof Detmer (redbulljack and Pointrox, please confirm your second driver ASAP, or I'll use one of your drivers from another series for the enduros).

Possibly for this infringement the weapon of choice will be papaya seeds, that started out as papaya fruits then shrunk back to papaya flowers, which disappeared, the tree itself shrunk and disasppeared below ground to leave one immensely concentrated black speck of papaya power.

I'd be very scared if I were you. MBNSNWH has been seen loading a papaya seed gun.

The Bathurst enduro will be run this weekend, with the first race (probably) tomorrow night. If you want to enter a driver, but not a car, there is a Trabant with two free places available.

As a part of giving the DDR Polizei a more positive image, they would like to enter the very talented Sergeant Frank Drebin, Detective Lieutenant Police Squad for the rest of the season in a Trabant (in polizei colours)

not in your car, he will not yet drive the enduro, also Lamberigts will not finish the season, because of his busy scheme (of course he will drive in the enduro)

Bathurst Enduro Race 1

The much awaited first race of the Bathurst REECCS enduro was expected to be a very exciting race, with the biggest grid yet (40 cars). From qualifying, it looked as if Dacia had the upper hand, with their 3 regular cars in the top 3, followed by some Ladas and Moskvichs. Not even the removal of the restrictors could help the Skodas, languishing down in Wartburg and Trabant territory.

The 3 Dacias pulled away from the pack off the start, looking as if they were going to dominate the race. Meanwhile, back in the pack all* cars (*well almost all cars - Micko Glotch had a quick roll) almost got through the first corner cleanly, but Holowczyc in the Alitalia Polski-Fiat had a tumble at turn 2, which dropped him well down the pack. Jari Kekkonen in the Arrowtech Moskvich passed both Jorma Kalervo and Laurent Seron for second place, while Guillaume Gauthier extended his lead. A bit further down the road was a 5 car battle for fifth involving Mortarhouse, Rick Simpson, Cannon, Frank Montana and Fleet, who quickly caught up to the slowing Dacia of Kalervo. Kalervo fell back to around 14th place at one stage, looking to have some sort of mechanical problem.

Back at the front, Gauthier had an unassailable lead, and Kekkonen had been passed by the hard charging Mortarhouse. Meanwhile, in the mid-pack, Ferdinando Blaszikowski has the strangest roll I've ever seen at the chase, with the car going back on two wheels to the gravel trap, hits the gravel and lands back on four wheels, and proceeds to get stuck behind a tyre wall.

Rick Simpson was on a charge, first dispatching of Ben Fleet and Garri Fomenko, before catching and passing Seron and Kekkonen. The last lap was a thriller for second between Simpson and Mortarhouse, with a massive battle between the two, Simpson gained the upper hand at the Chase, just as Gauthier crossed the line to win. Simpson took second... just. Even closer was the battle for fifth, with Charles Kwan coming from nowhere to steal the 5th place from Seron on the last corner. However, the chaos wasn't over yet, with Phoenix McAllister crashing heavily after the finish, the Lada brought to a halt with an engine fire.

Ben Fleet is happy with a top-10 finish, but is deciding that his heart lies more in single-seaters, so this will be his final REECCS race weekend. :(

Bathurst Enduro Race 2

One day after the first race of the enduro, it was the turn of the second group of drivers to hit the track. Niko Bellic nearly missed out, after Phoenix McAllister's crash after yesterdays race, however they borrowed an engine from Dave Simpson's old Lada, which was brought here specifically for spare parts for any Lada team. Astonishingly all 40 cars lined up yet again.

Qualifying saw the Lada's prove their dominance, with Dave Simpson taking pole from Richie White. Phil McCracken in the Dacia took 3rd, while the Skodas struggled, all but 3 being outqualified by Trabants.

The race was a lot like the first, with the pole-setter taking the lead and a large amount of drivers battling for the minor podium places. Richie White had a terrible start, falling to 7th by the end of the first lap, while Maxim Simonov had gained 3 positions up to 3rd. Jacek Piscopo undone his great qualifying position (8th) with a roll coming out of the Chase on lap 1. He dropped back to 30th. The Trabants were up to their usual antics, becoming unstable as soon as they hit anything with a curb. Including the pit-lane, as Dennis Mignolet found out, becoming a clear winner of the Coulthard Award.

Meanwhile, back at the front, Simonov had caught McCracken, however his passing attempt at Hell Corner ended with a double roll and he dropped back to 18th, McCracken didn't escape without damage, with a bit of front end damage that saw him drop back into the pack. This incident put Niko Bellic into second, however he had no chance of catching Simpson, who was 10 seconds ahead. Douglas Mann took 3rd position and gapped the large pack that was forming up in the rest of the top 10, which wasn't helped when a lapped Trabant blocked pack leader John Montana.

Bellic did catch up to Simpson, only because Simpson had backed off for a bit, however it was too little too late for the Serbian as Simpson took the win, his first in the REECCS. Mann finished 3rd, with Richie White moving back up to 4th. John Montana rounded out the top 5.

New season details are up in the first post. You will have to enter your drivers again - if you already have a driver in the REECCS just post a statement that the driver will be returning. Niko Bellic has the right to use #1, or continue with his current number.

Meerwick wants to keep the #11 number, but with a Skoda this time around, the mechanical retirements early in the season were disappointing.

Frank Zimmer and Rhys Davies will both be returning. Davies will drive the #34 Dacia, looking like the 2007/8 GRM, and Zimmer will drive the #22 Lada (I know I stole the number), now looking like the 2004 HRT.

Jackson Donaldson and Tom Douglas will be the only MRT representatives for this year. Tom will take over O'Lauchlan's 73 and Jackson will take Melrose's 74 which will be converted to whatever make O'Lauchlan used last year.
