Masta Valsattis:

Whilst I'm absolutely delighted for Andrew to score his first points and podium, I can't help but think my car is cursed. I haven't finished a race since the second round and my confidence is running low. I just hope a change is round the corner as I'm desperate to score a point this year.

12. Dennis Mignolet - Ligier - 1.43.040

Daniel Moreno's pole position streak ends at four. Williams have taken every pole this year except for the first race. Other than that, it was pretty stable in the rest of the grid. Oh, and Ben Fleet did not set a time in first qualifying, but we haven't seen or heard from the Pacifics all year.

Round 9: German Grand Prix
46 laps

Yet another spectacular race this time around. The start was chaotic as cars streamed into the first turn. Dennis Mignolet was hit but somehow remained in 13th. However, on the next lap, Poppy Whitechapel then made an easy pick for Reject of the Race after the worst spin turn since Mimmo Schiattarella's peformance at the '95 Monaco Grand Prix (oh wait, that hasn't happened yet...). I uploaded a not-laggy video here. This put Whitechapel out of contention, and seeing as her teammate challenged for a podium, I think she deserves the award. The start went well for Jack Christopherson as he pulled out a five second gap on Padraig O'Connell who was in second. Daniel Moreno dropped back to fourth and was mostly ineffectual until his retirement on Lap 17. Moreno's DNF badly affected his championship aspirations and put a pot on his disappointing week.

Other early retirements included Pippa Mann, who had a big shunt when her suspension failed, catapulting her into the wall on Lap 5. Gio van Dycke almost did the same thing while trying to pass Mann the lap before; he had a big spin but somehow avoided hitting the wall or oncoming traffic (although he did pit with throttle problems on the same lap). Masta Valsattis and last week's hero Éadbhard Ó'Caoimhín retired with mechanical problems.

On Lap 10, the order was 1. Christopherson 2. O'Connell 3. McAllister 4. Moreno 5. Zimmer. Zimmer passed Moreno and began to chase down McAllister for third. Douglas Mann's miserable weekend ended as his Peugot engine blew while Mann was in a lowly ninth place. Things would go from bad to worse for the McLaren team as Douglas (the other Douglas) also retired with an engine failure on Lap 24. One lap later, Zimmer finally passed McAllister after a long battle and set his sights on O'Connell. McAllister would not last long after that, his transmission seizing up just one lap later. The only round of pitstops was completed by Lap 25, with very little position change. Christopherson still held a massive lead but he would lose it on Lap 27 when his Williams stopped with a transmission problem. This handed the lead off to O'Connell who now had to hold off Zimmer for 19 laps. Oh boy.

The battle was fierce. Zimmer tried to pass O'Connell several times into the first corner but he did not succeed on any of them. This caused him to lose momentum and it allowed O'Connell get away multiple times. Zimmer kept on trying but O'Connell would not let the Benetton driver through. The drama went all the way to the last lap as Zimmer tried no less than three overtaking maneuvers but failed to pass the Ferrari. O'Connell's defensive driving gave him his second win of the season taking four vital points away from Zimmer.

Zimmer still takes the championship lead after his second place but it could have been so much more. In other notes, Leonhard von Gottorp finished third after Pieter Kickert retired with only three laps to go with a transmission problem. Takagi was fourth, taking his first points since Monaco. Because no one expected it, Kazuhiko Takagi is this race's IIDOTR Dennis Mignolet took a solid fifth for Ligier and Damon Cannon brought his Lotus home sixth. By the way, Minardi needs to beef up their electrical systems as both Valsattis and Spokes suffered electrical problems today.

To be out of the race, again, early on with another mechanical problem, just sums up my season so far. It seems eeryone else gets one lucky race and scores a point or two, whilst I'm sitting back in the garage. Oh well, might as well get pissed...

Oh, I turned on a screen recording app that I have and ran the race from a save file I saved beforehand. The save file keeps the race exactly the same as it was before so I restarted the race and just recorded Poppy's spin from the live race.

Round 10: Hungary
63 laps

I have to give some credit to the designers of Grand Prix 2. They have captured the dullness of the Hungaroring better than any other simulation, I think. Anyway, Daniel Moreno led from pole at the start, followed by Padraig O'Connell and Douglas Mann who both leapfrogged John Zimmer into Turn 1. Further back, Poppy Whitechapel forgot to brake for the turn, slamming into the back of the car in front and breaking her front wing. By the end of Lap 4, Zimmer had repassed O'Connell and Mann (not an easy task at the Hungaroring) and was now lapping considerable faster than Moreno. He easily caught up to Moreno but was stuck behind the Williams for six laps, unable to pass in the twisty turns. The same thing was happening just behind Zimmer as a large train including Mann, Christopherson, Takagi and Eadbhard followed behind Padraig O'Connell. No one was able to get past each other until the pit stops opened on Lap 16.

On the subject of pit stops, there were two different pit strategies that the drivers ran in the race. The first strategy was a two-stop strategy spearheaded by John Zimmer. The second strategy was the one-stop strategy, which Daniel Moreno took. Anyway, after John Zimmer finally got past Moreno, he made his pit stop on Lap 17 and was followed by Christopherson and O'Connell. Around this time, (I'm not completely sure which lap) Rory McAllister's Ferrari ground to a halt with a suspension failure, ending his race prematurely again. McAllister was clearly upset after the race and after his demand to leave the team after the last race, this did not improve his chances of staying at Ferrari. McAllister was only the third retirement of the race so far, although that was about to change...

Daniel Moreno made his pit stop on Lap 22, putting 42 laps worth of fuel in the car (by the way, I couldn't find any data on the size of 1994 F1 fuel tanks so I'll assume that this is possible). Moreno was good to go but he now had to catch Zimmer and his two-stop strategy. Other one-stoppers included Pablo Da Silva, Whitechapel and Damon Cannon. Unfortunately, Daniel Moreno's awful luck continued. It remains unclear if he would have beaten Zimmer on strategy alone but it was certainly feasible. Moreno's suspension failed on Lap 26, making it the the fourth time that he had taken pole and retired from the race. Zimmer was now free to romp off with the win, which he did.

The rest of the race was just watching to see whose car wouldn't make it to the end. Padraig O'Connell followed his teammate out of the race with a puncture on Lap 25. Pieter Kickert kicked the bucket (well his car did anyway) on Lap 33 after a suspension problem while running in the points. Leonhard von Gottorp struggled throughout the race and retired with and oil problem. Poppy Whitechapel had actually made her way up to eleventh with her one-stop strategy but she fell victim to a transmission problem. Éadbhard Ó'Caoimhín was the last to go, suffering an engine failure with only seven laps left. Zimmer's win firmly plants him in the lead of the Drivers' Championship but Jack Christopherson is not far behind after taking a competent second. Kazuhiko Takagi drove a solid race to take third and the two McLarens and James Davies filled out the rest of the points positions.

Oh, IIDOTR goes to Max von Hegel for a solid race in the Footwork. Reject of the Race has to be given to Ferrari but honorable mention goes to whoever thought that McAllister's car was in a safe spot on the track.

It's nice to finally finish anoter race, and a solid run to 10th aswell. The car was ok, but not fantastic.

The 1990s were better. Fact. And you bloody well know it.
