The Lapped Alternative Championship

Postby James1978 » 27 Jun 2011, 06:12

This is a totally mad idea but the way this year is turning out, I'm wanting to think up more weird and wacky alternative championships, so what I'm going to do here is eliminate anyone who finishes on the lead lap as the real-life winner, and the winner is going to be the first lapped runner, with points positions for the next runners after that. If a leading driver retires on the last lap in real life then they will win the races here (ie they can sacrifice positions in real life to win in this championship!!).

I'm hoping this will create some strange race-winenrs and champions, but I've only prepared 2011 so far to give you all a flavour of what's happening, I will follow this with going back to 1950 and then working through to 2010.

So 2011 so far looks like this:

Adrian Sutil 113 (3 wins, 2 2nd)
Sebastien Buemi 64 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Jaime Alguersuari 64 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Sergio Perez 55 (1 2nd, 1 3rd, 1 4th, 1 5th)
Nick Heidfeld 55 (1 2nd, 1 3rd, 1 4th, 1 5th)
Nico Rosberg 50 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Jarno Trulli 44 (1 4th)
Paul Di Resta 41 (1 3rd)
Heikki Kovalainen 40 (1 2nd)
Rubens Barrichello 40 (2 3rd)
Jerome D'Ambrosio 38 (1 2nd)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 31 (1 win)
Timo Glock 31 (1 3rd)
Fernando Alonso 25 (1 win)
Pastor Maldonado 22 (1 4th)
Michael Schumacher 19 (1 2nd)
Vitaly Petrov 18 (1 6th)
Narain Karthikeyan 14 (1 5th)
Kamui Kobayashi 10 (1 6th)

The Red Bulls, McLarens and Massa have thus far failed to score.

Sutil seems to have got this art down to a tee. HRT have won a race (Canada) due to lots of drivers finishing on the lead lap with all the safety cars!!!

I've no idea how other years will play out, so stay tuned! I suspect years with close fields like 2009 should be the most interesting though!

BTW, for the 50s I'm going to ignore the Indy 500 (since none of the regular drivers were in it anyway), and also ignore points for fastest laps (there isn't much record of who did the FL out of all the lapped runners sadly) :)

1950

Louis Rosier 23.5 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Alberto Ascari 16 (2 wins)
Peter Whitehead 11 (1 win)
Philippe Etancelin 10 (1 2nd)
Prince Bira 9 (1 2nd)
Yves Giraud-Cabantous 8 (1 win)
Toulo De Graffenried 7 (1 3rd)
Louis Chiron/Luigi Villoresi/Robert Manzon all 6 (1 2nd)
Bob Gerard 6 (1 3rd)
Raymond Sommer/Felice Bonetto/Pierre Levegh all 4 (1 3rd)
Cuth Harrison/Johnny Claes both 3 (1 4th)
Nello Pagani/Geoff Crossley/Nino Farina all 2 (1 5th)
Eugene Chaboud 2 (1 3rd shared)
Charles Pozzi 1.5 (1 4th shared)

Most of these drivers I'm thinking "Who"? :)

1951

Luigi Villoresi 22 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Louis Rosier 17 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Nino Farina 16 (2 wins, 1 of which shared, 1 3rd)
Felice Bonetto 16 (1 win shared, 2 2nd)
Alberto Ascari 11 (1 win, 1 4th)
Reg Parnell 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Consalvo Sanesi 9 (1 2nd, 1 4th)
Rudi Fischer 8 (1 win)
Yves Giraud-Cabantous 8 (1 2nd)
Toulo De Graffenried 8 (2 3rd)
Robert Manzon 6 (1 2nd)
Louis Chiron 5 (1 4th, 1 5th)
Pierre Levegh 5 (1 4th, 1 5th)
Andre Pilette/Piero Taruffi both 4 (1 3rd)
Johnny Claes/Andre Simon both 3 (1 4th)
Peter Walker/Jacques Swaters/Philppe Etancelin all 2 (1 5th)

Farina could have won this in Spain if he'd allowed Fangio to lap him - he was the last unlapped runner in real life, and would have overhauled Villoresi who had retired.

Mike Hawthorn 22 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Jean Behra 14 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Nino Farina 10 (1 win)
Robert Manzon 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Felice Bonetto 8 (1 win)
Ken Wharton 8 (1 2nd)
Alan Brown 8 (2 3rd)
Maurice Trintignant 7 (1 3rd)
Paul Frere/Andre Simon both 6 (1 2nd)
Dennis Poore/Roger Laurent both 4 (1 3rd)
Toulo De Graffenried/Charles De Tornaco/Eric Thompson/Fritz Reiss/Duncan Hamilton/Chico Landi all 3 (1 4th)
Peter Hirt/Johnny Claes/Peter Collins/Toni Ulmen/Lance Macklin all 2 (1 5th)

If you think I'm gonna work out all those tiebreaks then......... :)

The famous almost-reject, Alan Brown gets a couple of podiums!

In Formula One, probably, but not in Grand Prix motor racing in total - because of the frankly absurd "minimum points" system used in the pre-war European Championship, Tazio Nuvolari won his title in 1932 with only four points.

I was kinda looking forward to doing the later years myself - if i started with 2010 and worked backwards I probably wouldn't want to bother with the early years, doing it this way doing them first is the way to keep me going to get onto the later seasons.

I don't mind you doing a few 60s or 70s seasons, but I'd like to do all the 80s, 90s and 00s myself if that's ok?

No more shared drives (with one exception*) here so best results included:

1958

Roy Salvadori 25 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Harry Schell 23 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Cliff Allison 22 (1 win, 3 3rd)
Jack Brabham 20 (2 wins)
Jean Behra 14 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Maurice Trintignant 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Tony Brooks/Stuart Lewis-Evans/Masten Gregory all 8 (1 win)
Mike Hawthorn/Olivier Gendebien/Phil Hill/Graham Hill all 6 (1 2nd)
Jo Bonnier 6 (1 3rd)
Carlos Menditeguy/Carroll Shelby/Wolfgang von Trips/Jack Fairman all 4 (1 3rd)
Paco Godia/Luigi Musso/Gerino Gerini/Hans Herrmann all 3 (1 4th)
Horace Gould/Troy Ruttmann both 2 (1 5th)

*Italy had a bit of a complication. The first lapped runner in real life were Carroll Shelby and Masten Gregory sharing, however as shared drives were no longer eligible for points that year, I have promoted the next runner (Salvadori) as the winner even though he was 8 laps behind in real life!!

One more for tonight, it's

1962

Tony Maggs 29 (1 win, 3 2nd)
Jack Brabham 23 (1 win, 2 2nd)
John Surtees 21 (2 wins)
Jo Bonnier 18 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Bruce McLaren 13 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Carel Godin De Beaufort 12 (2 3rd)
Innes Ireland 10 (1 win)
Richie Ginther 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Giancarlo Baghetti 9 (1 win)
Heini Walter (who?) 9 (1 win)
Nino Vaccarella 9 (1 2nd)
Masten Gregory 7 (1 3rd)
Neville Lederle 6 (1 2nd)
Dan Gurney 6 (1 3rd)
Lucien Bianchi 6 (1 3rd)
Graham Hill 4 (1 3rd)
Lorenzo Bandini 4 (1 3rd)
Maurice Trintignant 4 (1 4th)
Willy Mairesse/Trevor Taylor/John Love all 3 (1 4th)
Jackie Lewis 3 (1 5th)
Bruce Johnstone 2 (1 5th)
Jim Clark/Jo Siffert/Phil Hill/Ernie Pieterse all 1 (1 6th)

I swear I'd never heard of Heini Walter and he wins a race here - it was Nurburgring, obviously with it being such a long lap, not many drivers tend to get lapped there! :)

Brabham had a chance to catch Maggs at the last race but they both ended up unlapped.

1963

Jo Bonnier 25 (26) (2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Dan Gurney 22 (2 wins, 1 3rd)
Graham Hill 18 (2 wins)
Richie Ginther 18 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Jim Hall 17 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Tony Maggs 17 (1 win, 1 4th)
Jack Brabham 16 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Lorenzo Bandini 16 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Bruce McLaren 15 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Jo Siffert 13 (1 win)
Innes Ireland 13 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jim Clark 12 (1 win)
Trevor Taylor 10 (1 2nd)
Chris Amon 9 (1 2nd)
John Surtees 6 (1 2nd)
Carel Godin De Beaufort 6 (2 4th)
Maurice Trintignant 4 (1 3rd)
Hap Sharp 3 (1 4th)
Ludovico Scarfiotti/Mike Hailwood/Peter Broeker all 2 (1 5th)
Tony Settember/Bernard Collomb both 1 (1 6th)

Unusually the champion didn't win a race, though it has to be said Bonnier was very consistent. Another driver I'd never heard of (probably becuase he's just not a reject with a 5th and 6th IRL), Jim Hall, wins a race.

1964

Richie Ginther 30 (1 win, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Lorenzo Bandini 18 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Peter Arundell 17 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Bob Anderson 16 (1 win, 2 4th)
Graham Hill 15 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Bruce McLaren 15 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Jim Clark 13 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Phil Hill 13 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Tony Maggs 12 (2 2nd)
Jo Siffert 11 (1 win)
Maurice Trintignant 10 (1 win)
Jack Brabham 9 (1 win)
Innes Ireland 9 (2 3rd)
Mike Hailwood 8 (1 3rd)
Dan Gurney 7 (1 2nd)
Trevor Taylor 7 (1 3rd)
Mike Spence 7 (2 4th)
Pedro Rodriguez 6 (1 2nd)
Chris Amon 6 (1 3rd)
Jo Bonnier 6 (2 4th)
Giancarlo Baghetti 6 (1 4th)
Walt Hansgen 4 (1 3rd)
Gerhard Mitter 2 (1 5th)
Moises Solana 1 (1 6th)

Ginther is by far the most consistent and wins comfortably. Bob Anderson is another one of those "who?" winners, and Trintignant signs off with a final win at Nurburgring. There's a point for the recently-profiled Solana though it remains to be seen whether or not he can unrejectify himself.

1965

Bruce McLaren 35 (3 wins, 1 2nd)
Jo Siffert 18 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Lorenzo Bandini 17 (1 win, 2 4th)
Jo Bonnier 15 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Graham Hill/John Surtees both 13 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Richard Attwood 12 (2 2nd)
Richie Ginther 12 (1 2nd, 2 4th)
Denny Hulme 11 (1 win)
Pedro Rodriguez 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Dan Gurney/Masten Gregory/Ronnie Bucknum all 9 (1 win)
Jack Brabham 9 (1 2nd)
Mike Spence 9 (1 3rd)
Jochen Rindt 7 (1 3rd)
Jackie Stewart 6 (1 2nd)
Frank Gardner 4 (1 3rd)
Bob Anderson/Innes Ireland both 3 (1 5th, 1 6th)
Paul Hawkins 2 (1 5th)
Peter De Klerk/Ian Raby/Bob Bondurant/Jim Clark all 1 (1 6th)

Two wins and a 2nd in the first three races made Mclaren pretty much uncatchable, and another win at Monza sealed it. I've seen Ronnie Bucknum mentioned elsewhere on here, and he's the latest obscure winner at his home race. Former champion Masten Gregory wins by being the only lapped finisher at Nurburgring.

Incidentally, upon seeing old classifications, there are drivers down as classified finishers despite being lots of laps behind (one such example is Jim Clark being classified 10th at Monza in 1965 despite him only completing 63 laps out of 76). I was debating whether to include results like that, as his 10th there became a 6th here, but I decided to let results stand if Wiki classified them. From 1966 on that rule is cleared up, so I will classify anyone who completes 90% of the winner's laps in THIS championship, not 90% of the real-life winner's laps.

1966

Jochen Rindt 28 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Graham Hill 27 (3 wins)
Denny Hulme 18 (2 wins)
Dan Gurney 17 (1 win, 2 3rd)
Mike Spence 13 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jim Clark 12 (2 2nd)
Peter Arundell 12 (1 2nd)
Lorenzo Bandini 11 (1 win)
Richie Ginther 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Bob Bondurant 9 (1 2nd)
Jack Brabham 6 (1 2nd)
John Surtees 6 (1 2nd)
Bob Anderson 6 (1 3rd)
Bruce McLaren 6 (2 4th)
Jackie Stewart 4 (1 3rd)
Jo Siffert 4 (1 3rd)
John Taylor 4 (1 4th)
Jo Bonnier 4 (1 4th)
Guy Ligier 3 (1 4th)
Chris Irwin 2 (1 5th)
Chris Amon/Ronnie Bucknum/Geki (who?) all 1 (1 6th)

Ironically, Rindt stole the title from Hill after running out of fuel at the Glen and ending up a lap behind! Nobody scored on more than 4 occasions!

1967

Mike Spence 31 (2 wins, 2 3rd)
Denny Hulme 24 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Pedro Rodriguez 24 (1 win, 1 3rd)
John Surtees 21 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Jo Siffert 19 (2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Chris Irwin 18 (1 2nd, 3 3rd)
Graham Hill 15 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Chris Amon 13 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Dan Gurney 12 (1 win)
Guy Ligier 11 (1 win) (!!!!!!)
Mike Parkes 9 (1 win)
Jackie Stewart 9 (1 win)
Bob Anderson 9 (1 3rd)
Jack Brabham 7 (1 3rd)
Ludovico Scarfiotti 6 (1 2nd)
Jim Clark 6 (1 2nd)
Jacky Ickx 6 (1 2nd)
Bruce McLaren 6 (1 3rd)
Jo Bonnier 4 (1 4th)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise 4 (2 5th)
David Hobbs 3 (1 4th)
Alan Rees 2 (1 5th)
Jonathan Williams 1 (1 6th)

Mike Spence wins but doesn't survive to be able to defend his title. :(

Guy Ligier wins at Nurburgring, the long lap certainly provides some odd winners!

1968

Jackie Stewart 27 (2 wins, 1 3rd)
Denny Hulme 20 (2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Bruce McLaren 19 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise 16 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jo Siffert 16 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jacky Ickx/Jackie Oliver/Pedro Rodriguez all 15 (1 win, 1 2nd)
John Surtees 15 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Jo Bonnier 14 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Chris Amon 14 (1 win, 1 4th)
Lucien Bianchi 13 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Piers Courage 13 (1 win, 1 4th)
Ludovico Scarfiotti 12 (2 2nd) - he was leading the points at the time of his death :(
Vic Elford 12 (1 2nd)
Brian Redman 9 (1 win)
Richard Attwood 7 (1 4th)
Kurt Ahrens Jr (who?)/ Dan Gurney both 6 (1 2nd)
Silvio Moser/Graham Hill both 4 (1 3rd) - that tie amuses me!
Henri Pescarolo 2 (1 5th)
John Love/Jack Brabham both 1 (1 6th)

To say I'm surprised Jackie Stewart wins this championship is rather an understatement - he was the only driver to win twice. It does remind me a lot of snake points though - not many large totals but lots of drivers scoring something-teen points. About 10 drivers could still have won going to the last race!

1969

Bruce McLaren 48 (4 wins, 2 2nd)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise 33 (1 win, 4 2nd)
Denny Hulme 22 (2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Pedro Rodriguez 19 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Graham Hill/John Surtees both 17 (1 win, 1 3rd, 1 4th, 1 6th)
Jackie Oliver 16 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Vic Elford 15 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jo Siffert 14 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Jacky Ickx 13 (1 win, 2 5th)
Johnny Servoz-Gavin 8 ( 2 3rd)
Silvio Moser 7 (2 4th)
Jack Brabham 6 (1 2nd)
Jochen Rindt 6 (1 3rd)
Pete Lovely 6 (2 4th)
Piers Courage 5 (1 4th)
Sam Tingle (who?) 3 (1 4th)

McLaren really got the knack of this thing, being a leading lapped runner. But it's the second time in three years where the defending champion is destined to die early the following season. :(

48 is more like a winning total though, none of this teens and twenties rubbish. :)

Oh yes, and it's only taken until the 20th season in this thing to produce the 2nd double champion!!!

Graham Hill 34 (2 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Henri Pescarolo 29 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Pedro Rodriguez 26 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Chris Amon 26 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Jacky Ickx 22 (2 wins, 1 3rd)
John Surtees 17 (2 2nd)
Jackie Oliver 15 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Francois Cevert 15 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jo Siffert 15 (1 2nd, 2 4th)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise 13 (2 3rd)
John Miles 11 (1 win)
Bruce McLaren 9 (1 win)
Rolf Stommelen 9 (1 win)
Peter Gethin 8 (2 3rd)
Mario Andretti/Clay Regazzoni/Andrea De Adamich all 6 (1 2nd)
Ronnie Peterson 6 (1 3rd)
Ignazio Giunti 5 (1 4th)
George Eaton/Derek Bell both 4 (1 3rd)
John Love/Johnny Servoz-Gavin/Emerson Fittipaldi/Denny Hulme all 3 (1 4th)

And another big name wins the lapped championship. Hill didn't actually score a single point after Brands, but nobody could catch him.

Helmut Marko/David Hobbs both 3 (1 4th)
Pedro Rodriguez/Francois Mazet/Andrea De Adamich all 2 (1 5th)
Gijs van Lennep 1 (1 6th)

Another one of those seasons where a lot of people score not very often. First relatively obscure winner for a while though!

Reine Wisell 3 (1 5th)
Peter Gethin/Wilson Fittipaldi/Dave Walker (still a reject!) all 2 (1 5th)
Rolf Stommelen 1 (1 6th)

What a strange year. 31 drivers scored points. THIRTY-ONE for heavens sake! Nobody scored more than 5 times, but good to see Amon a champion. Stommelen as defending champ managed only a single point!

Arturo Merzario 29 (3 wins)
Clay Regazzoni 26 (1 2nd, 4 3rd)

Mike Beuttler 19 (3 3rd)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise 17 (2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jackie Stewart 15 (1 win, 1 2nd) (I'm amazed he got lapped at all this year!)
Mike Hailwood 15 (1 win, 1 4th)
Gijs van Lennep 13 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Andrea De Adamich 13 (1 win)
Carlos Pace 13 (1 2nd)
David Purley 12 (2 2nd)
Niki Lauda 11 (1 2nd)
Graham Hill/Ronnie Peterson both 10 (1 win, 1 6th)
George Follmer 10 (2 3rd)
Wilson Fittipaldi/Francois Cevert both 6 (1 2nd)
Carlos Reutemann 6 (2 4th)
Chris Amon 5 (1 3rd)
James Hunt 4 (1 3rd)
Jackie Oliver 3 (1 4th)
Rikky Von Opel 3 (1 5th) - unrejectified!
Henri Pescarolo/Emerson Fittipaldi/Rolf Stommelen/Jean-Pierre Jarier all 2 (1 5th)
Nanni Galli/Jody Scheckter both 1 (1 6th)

Ickx won despite driving for three different teams, his win which sealed the championship was at the Glen driving for Frank Williams. Hulme looked to be walking it with 25 points from th first 6 races but only scored one more 2nd place over the rest of the season as McLaren's introduction of the M23 meant they got lapped a lot less. There's two more obscure winners in Andrea De Adamich and Gijs Van Lennep!!!

Also 31 drivers score again, but at least this time there's three more races than the previous season! :)

I swear this thing's getting stranger!!

1974

Graham Hill 35 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Denny Hulme 32 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Mike Hailwood 28 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Carlos Pace 25 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Carlos Reutemann 22 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Emerson Fittipaldi 21 (2 wins)
Vittorio Brambilla 18 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Ronnie Peterson 14 (1 win, 1 4th)
John Watson 14 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jacky Ickx 12 (1 win, 1 4th)
Guy Edwards 12 (1 2nd)
David Hobbs 11 (1 win)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 11 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Patrick Depailler 10 (1 2nd)
Niki Lauda 9 (1 win)
Ian Ashley (who?) 9 (1 win)
Rikky Von Opel 9 (1 2nd)
Hans-Joachim Stuck 8 (1 2nd)
Howden Ganley/Mario Andretti/Chris Amon all 6 (1 2nd)
Tim Schenken 6 (2 4th)
Henri Pescarolo/Jody Scheckter/Arturo Merzario/Tom Belso/Dieter Quester (two rejects scoring podiums!) all 4 (1 3rd)
Tom Pryce 4 (1 4th)
Rolf Stommelen 4 (2 5th)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise/Clay Regazzoni/Helmuth Koinigg all 3 (1 4th)
Ian Scheckter/Brian Redman both 2 (1 5th)
Eddie Keizan/Mark Donohue both 1 (1 6th)

We're now up to 36 scorers!!

Anyway this was the battle of the veteran former-champions, Hill came through with a win in America to steal it from Hulme. Mike Hailwood was leading at the time of his career-ending crash. David Hobbs and Ian Ashley (Nurburgring again!) are the latest obscure winners.

I know 1975 has been posted earlier, but I've worked it out and double-checked using results on Wiki, and what I've come up with is slightly different to what was posted, so here goes:

1975

Jody Scheckter 33.5 (2 wins*, 3 2nd)
Mark Donohue 28 (2 wins)
Carlos Reutemann 23.5 (2 wins*, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Carlos Pace 21 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Patrick Depailler 20.5 (2 wins)
John Watson 20.5 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd*)
Emerson Fittipaldi 16 (1 win, 1 2nd*, 1 3rd)
Jacky Ickx 14 (2 2nd)
Tom Pryce 14 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Tony Brise 13 (1 win)
Jacques Laffite 9 (1 win)
Hans-Joachim Stuck 9 (1 win)
Graham Hill 9 (1 2nd)
Wilson Fittipaldi 9 (2 3rd)
Ronnie Peterson 9 (1 3rd)
Vittorio Brambilla 8 (2 3rd*)
Mario Andretti 6 (1 2nd)
Bob Evans 6 (1 3rd)
Gijs van Lennep/James Hunt/Harald Ertl all 4 (1 3rd)
Alan Jones 4 (1 4th)
Brett Lunger 3.5 (1 4th)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 3 (1 2nd*)
Rolf Stommelen/Guy Tunmer both 3 (1 4th)
Lella Lombardi 2.5 (1 4th*) (JUST unrejectified!)
Chris Amon 2 (1 5th*, 1 6th)
Torsten Palm/Arturo Merzario both 2 (1 5th)
Jochen Mass/Eddie Keizan both 1 (1 6th)

*Half points for Spain and Austria.

Another real champion who wins this!

Mark Donohue was leading at the time of his death, not that first time that's happened. :(

1976

Alan Jones 44 (3 wins, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Tom Pryce 29 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
John Watson 28 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Emerson Fittipaldi 24 (1 win, 2 3rd)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 24 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jacky Ickx 23 (2 wins)
Jochen Mass 23 (3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Carlos Reutemann 17 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Harald Ertl 13 (1 win)
Carlos Pace 13 (2 3rd)
Clay Regazzoni 12 (1 win)
Alessandro Pesenti-Rossi (who?) 12 (1 win)
Ronnie Peterson 11 (1 win)
Patrick Depailler 11 (1 win)
Gunnar Nilsson 11 (1 2nd)
Chris Amon 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Henri Pescarolo 10 (1 2nd, 1 4th)
Vittorio Brambilla 10 (1 2nd, 1 4th)
Brett Lunger 10 (2 3rd)
Hans-Joachim Stuck 9 (1 win)
Renzo Zorzi/Mario Andretti/Guy Edwards/James Hunt all 6 (1 2nd) (two rejects and two champions tied!!)
Ingo Hoffmann/Larry Perkins/Michel Leclere all 3 (1 4th)
Jacques Laffite 3 (1 5th)
Lella Lombardi/Rolf Stommelen both 2 (1 5th)
Bob Evans/Arturo Merzario/Hans Binder/Alex Ribeiro all 1 (1 6th)

Third real champion in a row to win the lapped championship (though not in the same years obviously!), though unusally it was quite comfortable for Jones as he had it sealed before going to Fuji. Hunt only scored at the last race, and Regazzoni at the 2nd last race, so only Lauda and Scheckter (I think) were the only regulars not to score. The last race at the long Nurburgring produces yet another backmarker winner Alessandro Pesenti-Rossi, I've no idea who he even is as he isn't profiled on here!

There aren't any really long laps left from 1977 onwards are there? It's probably Spa which returns in 1983 which may produce the most obscure winners now.

Lella Lombardi only scores a fifth in this? I'm not going to make it worse by saying it should be halved for being a half-points race...
As hardcore as a peach...

She got a halved 4th place is the 1975 Spanish GP. Her 5th was in the 1976 Austrian GP, she was 12th in real life, but the first lapped runner was Harald Ertl in 8th, so he won that race in the championship!!

1977

Jacques Laffite 43 (2 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Hans-Joachim Stuck 33 (3 wins, 1 3rd)
Rupert Keegan 22 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Carlos Reutemann 21 (2 wins)
Riccardo Patrese 20 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Vittorio Brambilla 20 (1 win, 2 3rd)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 20 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Emerson Fittipaldi 17 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Patrick Neve 17 (1 win, 1 4th)
Gunnar Nilsson 16 (2 2nd, 1 3rd)
James Hunt 16 (2 2nd, 1 3rd) - I'm amazed he scores at all actually!
Brett Lunger 16 (1 2nd)
Hans Binder 15 (1 win, 1 4th)
Jochen Mass 12 (1 win, 1 4th)
Mario Andretti 12 (1 win, 1 4th)
Clay Regazzoni 12 (2 2nd)
Jody Scheckter 10 (1 win)
Alex Ribeiro 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Vern Schuppan 9 (1 win)
Ronnie Peterson 8 (2 3rd)
Jacky Ickx/Alan Jones/Danny Ongais all 6 (1 2nd)
Renzo Zorzi/Carlos Pace/Patrick Depailler/John Watson/Patrick Tambay all 4 (1 3rd)
Ingo Hoffmann/Harald Ertl both 3 (1 4th)
Larry Perkins/Brian Henton/David Purley/Kunimitsu Takahashi all 2 (1 5th)
Ian Scheckter/Gilles Villeneuve both 1 (1 6th)

Dodgy goings-on here. Laffite was 5 points ahead of Stuck going to Fuji - and was on the lead lap when he ran out of fuel and therefore became the winner of the lapped championship. Stuck had been running 2nd of the lapped runners and the 6 points he would have got if Laffite had finished on the lead lap would have made him champion, but he was relegated to 3rd.

Patrese won on his debut in Monaco, and there are three other obscure winners:

Hans Binder (South Africa)
Vern Schuppan (Germany - so much for the change of venues stopping obscure winners!)
Patrick Neve (Italy)

BTW - once I get into the 80s, I will do a constructors championship too (I didn't really understand how it worked before 1981!) and also start summarising at the end who won each race, as other people are doing for their alternative championships.
