And so begins the inaugural F1RMGP Women's European Cup. If the early indications in pre-season testing weren't ominous, they are now. If only the Team America hierarchy would have stuck around to see this – so SWNSNBM couldn't quite dethrone Vanina Ickx from pole, but at least she has her team-mate and rear gunner in close quarters. Sandwiched between the two Yanks is the amazing Michèle Mouton, proving that the passage of time has done nothing to blunt her skills... which are very well transferable to single-seaters. Emma Kimiläinen, barely out of school, struck one for the youngsters, followed very closely by legendary F1 reject, Giovanna Amati in the (somehow vastly improved) ATS Rial! Team-mate Natacha Gachnang led a bunch of five separated by less than two seconds that (almost amazingly) contains Milka Duno; the first-ever Formula Woman champ, Natasha Firman, and IndyCar soon-to-be-legend (we think) Simona de Silvestro rounded out the top half of the grid – though why Simona was so far back is something of a mystery. Divina Galica's return to racing passed adequately at best, and separated by only two thousandths – Rahel Frey, doing a hell of a lot better than her notorious dad ever did, and the near-unproven Yuri Mitsui. Jutta Kleinschmidt probably wishes she was back on the Paris-Dakar rally instead of on a track; cue also Cyndie and The Wolf (sounds like a children's opera to me...) being well behind their team-mates. Worse was to follow for Katherine Legge, doing nothing to shake off her DTM nightmare, while the reconstituted Lella Lombardi could only fight off Pippa Mann and Junko Mihara at the back of the grid. For the Prostines, it was a sticky situation. With Pippa Cow more than a second off the back of the rest of the grid, at least she made the 107% time; Karen Andrews didn't, and was only saved from ignominy because the DNQs will only kick in after the first three races are done. Aren't the Series Management generous? The Prostine team will have to hope they stay that way...

When was the last time a Minardi won a race? Some say it was 2008, at Monza, in the hands of Sebastian Vettel, but now we have no argument. How did Vanina Ickx drag a car that was good for very little in the 2013 main series, with a horribly underpowered engine, to such a dominant win? It was almost like watching her famous dad clean up at Le Mans, only with a shorter race. Team America WEC's parent operation may be defunct, but their all-American drivers delivered – the way the men used to do in 2011 before it all started to unravel, and with only three tenths separating the Yanks at the finish line, it could have been either of them on the second step of the podium. Rounding out a brilliant day for those cars that utterly failed to shine in 2013, Giovanna Amati hauled her ATS Rial ARC-4 to fourth place – four places higher than it had ever finished before, and that was after a freak result. Not this time – you get the idea Giovanna's pace is genuine, and she was chased all the way by Ana Beatriz in the equally failsome Lola, and Natasha Firman – let's not forget that her Isle of (wo)Man team fields a Stefan! That's a first ever points finish for that car. So, that is (as you'd expect) four of the drivers instantly unrejectified in this series, with two more taking a step towards that goal, and after those top six – it was the lapped cars. So Emma Kimiläinen was "best of the rest", beating Natacha Gachnang, Simona de Silvestro (what happened to her? Ninth isn't enough...) and a rather relieved Susie Wolff for the rest of the points. Susie's suspect performance in pre-season testing ("let's just say she's earned that zero already" was one memorable quote) hasn't helped her nerves, but a point here may have calmed her down a bit. Then there's the enigma that is Milka Duno – many of her detractors will be over the moon to see her not score, while hoping that team-mate Rahel Frey can overhaul her in the title race; not today, though, but it's no points for either of them. Further down the order there aren't too many surprises, though many plaudits were given to the hologramatically-revived Lella Lombardi, racing again after the minor inconvenience of being dead for 22 years. She said it was "good to be back", if little more. For all the praise that is usually heaped on her, though, Pippa Mann will be scowling after a poor qualifying led to an equally poor race – 17th and two laps down. Reject Of The Race, though, for the first time in the WEC, goes to Michele Bumgarner – stone dead last, a lap behind the hopeless Pippa Cow, and two laps behind the horribly-out-of-practice Junko Mihara; how did that happen? It's a nightmare start for her, and for everyone watching on TV in the Philippines. There were four retirements; Yuri Mitsui and Michèle Mouton both smashed their gearboxes, that in Mouton's car failing to keep up with her lightning-speed WRC gearchanges; she needs to ease off just a little bit at the next race. Engine failures took out Divina Galica and Karen Andrews, who was fortunate to be in the race in the first place; with Alain Prost having now completely run away from any marginal involvement with the Prostines in favour of delegating absolutely everything to his son, it's a baptism of fire for all of them. Which, appropriately enough, is exactly what Andrews' engine did. With a car that has spent a year being used and abused by Olivier Grouillard, Andrews must be wondering what she has dropped herself into. More about that situation as it unfolds...

A qualification on 2nd and 4th, and a double-podium would usually count as a good result in most team's books. Certainly, after Team America's miserable 2013, the team should be pleased with such a result. However, comments from Colonel Sanders suggest that this is most definately not the case. Both SWNSNBM and Sarah Fisher looked slightly disappointed with their returns - after all, the team looked near unstoppable in pre-season testing, with both drivers topping all testing sessions and coming 1-2 in both the morning and afternoon sessions at the 3rd test. Still, despite not winning the race, the other Minardiva driven by Simona de Silvestro could only manage 9th, ensuring the team an early lead in the Constructors' Championship.

This whole series seems to be geared round a combination of quality car / terrible drivers or rubbish car / quality drivers. Guess which one is coming out on top at the moment. Though this is only after round one.

A Hart engine? In the TG213? It's a Renault V8, me old mucker. Toleman dropped the Hart after the end of the 2011 season. It has not been seen since.

I would say Lella put it best, but then, the DAMS is approximately at the level of the Minardi on performance, and Vanina Ickx just won in a Minardi. American Rejects indeed.

It is a Renault V8 then. Sorry, I though the most rejectful lump to grace the back of a Toleman was a Hart 415T. And that Toleman kept it for this series. My mistake.

Ye gods. It's as you were at Imola for the top three places, but if Vanina Ickx thinks she has it all her own way, having beaten the rest of the field by seven tenths... maybe her two closest rivals will have something to say about that. Leading the charge behind those three is Emma Kimiläinen, with Sarah Fisher in an ATS Rial sandwich. How Günther Schmidt's squad have transformed that clunker of a chassis into something competitive is a mystery. Michele Bumgarner made up for her terrible race at Imola by lining up eighth, followed by Milka Duno and Natasha Firman rounding out the top ten. Divina Galica and Katherine Legge put their AGSs in the midfield, with Rahel Frey, Yuri Mitsui and Cyndie Allemann swar,ing around them; nobody quite knows what had been happening to Jutta Kleinschmidt and Simona de Silvestro when their cars are capable of so much more. Alsp getting the short end of the stick were Lella Lombardi, finding the transition back to real life rather tricky, the Wolff failing to howl, and Pippa Mann and Junko Mihara being frighteningly off the pace. But not as much as the two Prostines, who put in equally hopeless performances to miss the 107% time by half a second. They only have one more race after this to prove they're worthy of racing.

V is for Vanina, V is for Victory... again. But, as predicted in qualifying, she did not have it all her own way, because snapping at her gearbox right the way to the line was Michèle Mouton, who came within a second of taking all the glory for herself. SWNSNBM initially tried to take the fight to her Belgian rival, but broke a driveshaft while trying just a bit too hard, and the former rally legend picked up the gauntlet and ran with it. Still, though, Team America ended up on the podium, with Sarah Fisher saluting the crowd instead of her more illustrious team-mate. Fantastic Finn Emma Kimiläinen drove a fine race to fourth and unrejectified herself on the spot; Natacha Gachnang did herself a power of good with sixth, taking the first step towards that glorious accolade, which team-mate Giovanna Amati had already done at Imola. She finished fifth, and that took a fine haul of points for ATS Rial's WEC subsidiary. Michele Bumgarner made up for her embarrassment at Imola, taking American Rejects' first points for seventh and somewhat ramming Lella Lombardi's harsh (if slightly self-censored) words about the DAMS chassis back down her hologrammatic throat. Simona de Silvestro's bizarre lack of pace in the twice-winning Minardi still netted her four points for eighth place, while Divina Galica also opened her account, and Natasha Firman scored a point in the Isle of (wo)Man-branded Stefan. Cyndie Allemann and the two Lola Bunnies missed out, although it wasn't a completely rejectful performance from Susie Wolff that her torrid qualifying would have suggested. Lella Lombardi could only take 14th, with Pippa Mann not far behind her... and the two Prostines waaaaaaaaay back in the distance. But, at least they finished, which is more than can be said for both Super Reppu! cars, both suffering engine explosions, as well as Milk & Doughnuts, who were deservedly awarded Reject Of The Race. Rahel Frey hit the kerb at the chicane too hard and smashed her suspension, while some catastrophic idiocy amongst the mechanics meant Milka Duno was sent out to race with one wheel not properly fixed to the hub... and her race was run at Ste Devote on the first lap. Transmission problems plagued the other three retirements, which were Jutta Kleinschmidt, Katherine Legge and – as we've already mentioned – SWNSNBM, who should have been right in the mix.

Two cars which are 100% certain to qualify in the real-life grid are completely ignored. I'm not going to say which two.

I'm already getting concerned that the performance bands for the 1994 cars in MGP2 are considerably narrower than the 1991 cars in MGP1, and there's going to be a lot of weirdly similar grids and results. At least in MGP1 there was a definite possibility of a car racking up a DNQ at one race getting a top-six grid position in the next... but I will wait and see what happens here.

Three races in, and Vanina Ickx's stranglehold on pole position is broken by a determined Michèle Mouton... maybe she was just trying to drive away from the unwanted attention of her team boss. Vanina wouldn't be completely denied though, and on the front row of the grid, still has a clear shot at the first corner. There's a fine performance from Ana Beatriz, in fourth for Mastercard Lola Bunny, and also impressive were Divina Galica and Kathering Legge for AGS; Natacha Gachnang managed to shove her ATS Rial between them, with her vastly more experienced team-mate nowhere in sight. SWNSNBM and Sarah Fisher might be disappointed with their positions, but the second Minardivas and Toleman drivers won't – Simona de Silvestro and Jutta Kleinschmidt are finally showing what they're capable of. Lella Lombardi's rave from the grave continues with 12th place is a car she can't stand, Emma Kimiläinen, Rahel Frey and The Wolf are not quite where they should be, and it's the usual suspects hanging towards the back, although nobody expected to see Giovanna Amati in a grid slot more fitting the men who drove her car last year. Celebration abounds down in the Prostine garage, though, as both drivers beat the 107% time, even if Karen Andrews was a bit too close for comfort. Not so Yuri Mitsui, though, who had a complete nightmare in qualifying; no doubt Aguri Suzuki and Mika Salo are already preparing excuses involving meat pies, but Yuri is lucky – this is the last race where those outside 107% will be allowed to race.

Don't let the result fool you; this was not a cruise. While Vanina Ickx may have got the jump on Michèle Mouton at the start, Mouton kept the gap at a steady five seconds for 20-odd laps, reeled in her rival as the first pit stops approached and pounced when Ickx's tyres were shot to bits. Unfortunately, the Belgian got her revenge, when Moutopn decided to indulge in a spot of her former favourite motorsport and went for a detour over the grass ten laps from the end. Mouton closed the gap again, but it was too little, too late; three wins on the bounce for Vanina. Divina Galica kept out of trouble, and turned in a fine performance in the AGS to take a podium and unrejectify herself; team-mate Katherine Legge also had a decent race, scored her first points and made a step towards unrejectification – a fine day all round for the team. SWNSNBM had a fair to middling afternoon, trundling home as the last driver on the lead lap; Simona de Silvestro didn't mind being lapped too much, her season is finally underway properly. Sarah Fisher scored more points for Team America to keep them in second place for the Bertha Benz Cup; Milka Duno scored her first and M&D's first points of the season, to the bemusement of Tallulah Shekelslike who still can't understand why the team her dad "obtained" for her isn't winning, while Emma Kimiläinen and Natasha Firman rounded off the points positions. Lella Lombardi was unlucky to miss out; is she finally getting used to the DAMS chassis that caused her recent ire, or has her hard-light hologram stopped *static* middle of the race? Further down amongst the non-points scorers, Jutta Kleinschmidt might still go unnoticed by her team boss, Susie Wolff is not howling at anywhere near full volume, and it was a horribly disastrous race for Giovanna Amati, being beaten by Junko Mihara and finishing only just ahead of Karen Andrews in the slightly-less-reticent Prostine.

Prostine were unlucky not to have both cars finish, a but of shoddy pit work seeing to Pippa Cow, while namesake Mann also had tyre problems, bursting her front right against a sharp kerb and sending her into the wall. Much the same fate had happened to Cyndie Allemann four laps earlier. Ana Beatriz' fine qualifying effort came to nothing as electrical gremlins saw off her Lola after only three laps; Natacha Gachnang was equally miserable after her car sprayed oil into the track and her engine seized. That oil was what did for Yuri Mitsui; swaying around all over the track like an old drunkard, she hit the ATS Rial's oil four laps later and slewed head-first into a tyre barrier, thus making an ignominious end to a miserable weekend which earned her a deserved Reject Of The Race.

See, Vanina was having none of that rubbish in Barcelons (I mean, second on the grid?) and took her third pole of the season from a very determined Michèle Mouton. It's almost as you were for that race, though – Ana Beatriz third again, but with SWNSNBM and Simona de Silvestro beating the Galica/Gachnang/Legge group of three. There was another creditable performance from the almost-outcast Jutta Kleinschmidt at Toleman, The Wolf finally shows a glimmer of the talent we all thought she had by getting into the top half of the grid, with Emma Kimiläinen on the way back up again as well. Milka Duno and Lella Lombardi are again locked together, and all the way further down the grid there's a familiar look to it... although the Prostines seem to be steadily improving, being well clear of the now-active 107% cut-off mark, and both drivers beat Yuri Mitsui again. So, for the fourth time in succession we have a full grid...

All right, this time it was a masterclass. What else can I say when Vanina Ickx lapped the entire field except her team-mate, and even then the gap was 1'27" which was practically a lap? So it's 100 points out of 100 for the Belgian, but all is not lost behind her – as in second, third and fourth came Simona de Silvestro, Ana Beatriz and Natacha Gachnang, all hauling themselves out of rejectdom at the same time, and with two of those taking their first podium of the year. Sarah Fisher had already escaped that unwanted record at the first race of the season; Susie Wolff took her first step in that direction as the Lola Bunnies shook off their early season bout of myxomatosis. Lella Lombardi picked up her first points of the season, as well as the first points since she "got better" from cancer, as they say in Top Gear; at the back of the points, anyone wondering why SWNSNBM scored only one point and Michèle Mouton none at all was because both their cars suffered horrible misfires towards the end of the race that sent them crashing down the order, finishing three laps down and with Mouton completely out of the points. Their loss, though, was Junko Mihara's gain, as she found just enough talent to keep her car on the road and bring it home ahead of some rather more illustrious names. So it the first score of the season for her and Super Reppu!, running a car which is capable of so much more, but maybe the team's insistence on running only Japanese drivers who had to be brought out of motor racing retirement to compete in this series wasn't quite as hare-brained as was first thought.

Down the order came those who couldn't profit from the destruction derby that was happening all over the field. SWNSNBM and Mouton have been mentioned, but at least they were classified finishers. Giovanna Amati was the one who was unlucky to miss out on the points, while Cyndie Allemann and (amazingly) Pippa Cow weren't far behind. Right at the back, Yuri Mitsui's dip in form continued, as her qualifying time was no anti-fluke and she spent the whole race battling with Karen Andrews for the honour of not taking the wooden spoon... which, unfortunately, went to Japan on a day that the other half of the garage was celebrating madly. The attrition had started early with Michele Bumgarner and Katherine Legge both pulling off the track with their cars turned into improvised flamethrowers; ten laps later, Jutta Kleinschmidt threw her Toleman into the wall, and being the only driver to crash out as opposed to suffering a car failure, took color=#ff0000]Reject Of The Race[/color], which will only destroy her standing even further with the lecherous Flavio Briatore. More engine trouble followed for Emma Kimiläinen and Milka Duno, then – on the same lap as Duno's engine vandalised itself – so did Divina Galica's suspension, which exploded into a million shards of sharp carbon fibre. The disinterested French marshals would ultimately be responsible for the demise of Rahel Frey and Pippa Mann, both exiting the race with shredded tyres. The Manx was on course for a potential points finish, and launched into a tirade at the marshal that even Jason Plato would have thought twice about. He shrugged and pretended not to understand until Pippa's fist slammed into his face. The F1RMGP Series Management took a very dim view... of the marshal, and fined him a thousand euros for his dreadful work.
