Ettore Chimeri driver profile!

Postby eytl » 03 Jun 2012, 20:11

Hi everyone,

Still caught up in the fervour of Pastor Maldonado's Spanish GP victory, I did a little bit of digging to see if Johnny Cecotto had been the only Venezuelan to have raced in F1 before The Reverend. As it turned out, he wasn't. There had been one before him, even if he had not been born in Venezuela: Ettore Chimeri.

A little bit more digging revealed a short, ultimately tragic, but intriguing story. How many F1 drivers can claim to have been a fighter pilot in World War II? How many can claim to have owned and raced a car previously driven by Juan Manuel Fangio? And not just any car, but the very same car that carried Fangio to arguably his greatest ever Grand Prix victory? And how many can then claim to have had Fangio take the wheel of that car again, and almost write it off in an accident?

Ettore Chimeri ticks all of those boxes. Check out his story here: http://www.f1rejects.com/drivers/chimeri/index.html

Cheers,
Enoch

P.S. Working on another driver profile - hopefully to be completed by the end of July.

So this is that South American driver, would never have guessed it, even with all the clues.

Anyway, these profiles seem to be coming like buses do, none for ages, then plenty all at once. I look forward to reading it later.

No, this is not the South American driver I originally had in mind. Without Maldonado's win I would have never given Chimeri a second thought. Since it's a relatively short story I decided to slot him in.

The next profile is the promising South American driver who never completed a full season. Clue: there are also links here to the winners of the last two GPs.

Lovely article, very interesting story indeed.

I have a hunch who this South American chap might be...

Another brilliant profile. I always thought Johnny Cecotto was the only Venezuelan to drive in F1 before The Reverend.

Colour me intrigued as to the identity of this 'other' South American driver profile...

Epic profile, I saw on the main page that he was going to be the next profiled driver and I had to look at wikipedia to see who he was.

This....surprised me.It even passed me when doing my Nation's Cup alternate championship, with Venezuela in one of the seasons way before Cecotto.

As for your next mystery South American Driver,I still think it will be Cecotto.Look at it.Never completed a full season, still a reject, haven't had a profile....

Although I wonder what link he has to Mark Spider-Web...

I really want to say who I think it is. He fits the criteria; he's never done a whole season and a link to Webber and (loosely) to Maldonado. I believe he scored points, but only after the points system changed in '03.

If it's not Cecotto, I'm guessing Antônio Pizzonia, or maybe Luciano Burti.

For the New Zealander, I'll say Graham McRae.

As for the Austrian driver, there are three options: Helmut Marko, Hans Binder and Karl Oppithauser. I'll say Binder, because he replaced Masami Kuwashima

Pizzonia would suit the bill in that case - he was Webber's team mate at Jaguar and at Williams (when Heidfeld was injured), which would explain that link, whilst he drove for Williams and raced in GP2 against Maldonado (albeit at different teams), which would give him a slightly looser connection to Maldonado.

Great profile, I also think the next profile will be Antonio Pizzonia. As for the Austrian, I am hoping that Harald Ertl gets a profile, mainly because of his awesome beard.

Yeah, I was thinking of Pizzonia...I didn't want to say because I could be wrong (which I'm not a fan of being, to be honest) . But he does, for the reasons mario mentioned, have those links to both Maldonado and Webber.

Talking of Pizzonia, he did complete a full season... but over 3 different seasons :) Each year, he picked up where he left off

He already has a profile

Other than Pizzonia, Burti is the only other possibility I can think of. A Burti profile would be amazing, i've never seen a driver to attracted to on-track carnage.

Either profile would get me really interested. Burti might be able to shed some light on how bad things were at Prost whilst I've always wondered why Pizzonia sucked so much at Jaguar.

I second this.

While on the subject of the 1950's a Dries van der Lof profile would be great also.
