Aston Martin team profile

Postby eytl » 31 Dec 2010, 22:49

Hi everyone,

Well, it's 11.47pm on 31 December here in Sydney, and I have a new year surprise for you all - a new team profile!

Quick quiz: how many of you knew that Aston Martin once made a highly-unsuccessful stab at F1? Well, here's the full story:
http://www.f1rejects.com/teams/astonmartin/index.html

All thanks (and credit) to "mario" who did the research and wrote the draft of the article, which I have converted into a team profile and uploaded onto the site, just before 2011 comes around.

Enjoy!

Cheers, and happy new year to you all,
Enoch

Nice work, had no idea Aston Martin were a reject team as well. Any idea what team's next on, Osella? AGS?

A few years back (around the time I started to follow this site in 2007), the "next team" screen read Scarab (and did so for a couple of years more).

Oh yes? When's yours?

And indeed, happy 30th birthday to HWNSNBM! (It's still New Year's Day in Hungary as I type this.)

But it's already the 2nd here, which means :o   I've just entered my thirties as well ...

Firstly, like tommykl, I would like to wish you Happy Birthday too - I'm sure that you're having a great time.

Secondly, thank you to everybody who has been so kind about the article - and thanks to Enoch for editing my article so it fits with the rest of the profiles on the site. To be honest, I wouldn't mind coming back to it at some point, since I think that I could improve my grammar, but I'm pleased that even as it is, it is going down well.

As an aside, if there are those who are interested about Scarab, there is a piece over at Forix that I stumbled on http://forix.autosport.com/8w/scarab.html about their attempt to break into Formula 1. It's interesting to read, and in a way a shame that what was a well run, professional outfit was ultimately let down by an out of date design, but I suppose that's life.

Regarding team names, although the official F1 website lists the team as Aston Martin, it was a time when contructors sold chassis to teams, so Cooper did not enter 12 Cooper Climax cars into the British Grand Prix rather Cooper had 3 cars, but a number of other teams used them like Rob Walker Racing, Equipe Nationale Belge, Reg Parnell and the wonderfully named Ace Garage. Technically Aston Martin were entered as a team as the David Brown Corporation rather then Aston Martin although the Chassis was entered as an Aston Martin. So technically isn't it the David Brown Corporation team profile?...

Hmm, forgotten that Carroll Shelby, he of sports car and Shelby sports cars fame is in fact an F1 Reject as he entered 8 races and although is listed as coming 4th in the 1958 Italian GP, he was sharing a drive and could not score points and he had already retired on Lap 1 of the race too....

Great article, I remember Aston Martin was trying to get back into F1 with Prodrive and David Richards a few years back, but they were obviously dissuaded by their terrible performance the first time around! Also, thanks to Mario and Enoch, you did an excellent job.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ENOCH AND HWNSNBM!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Well, the entry form, as you say, listed the team under their parent company, the David Brown Corporation. However, for the Constructors Championship, which had been introduced in 1958, the official Constructor was Aston Martin, and the car was badged and branded as an Aston Martin.

Perhaps, in some ways, the situation is analogous to what happens today, where the name of the constructor is used instead of the official team name - we talk of Ferrari and Mercedes, not Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro or Mercedes GP Petronas F1 Team (which are the official team names submitted to the FIA). After all, to this day people still talk of Aston Martin winning the 1959 Le Mans 24h, and Aston Martin use that heritage themselves when talking about their plans for Le Mans, even though technically the original team was the "David Brown Racing Department" on the entry form.
