Pre-qualifying Alternative Championship

Postby FullMetalJack » 09 Jan 2011, 08:04

Basically, pre-qualifying results count for points. This should be a close championship because it will probably be the competitive teams only doing half of each season. All results will count towards the championship, points system from that year will be used.

That's because it was only Volker Weidler in the first half of the season (De Cesaris's results saved Danner in the first half), and Danner's 3 points at Phoenix promoted them.

I'll do 1990 tomorrow if I get time.

IIRC, some South African GPs in the 60's as well as some GP's in the mid-to-late 70's also had prequalifying...

Yup, 7th place 5 times with Giacomelli. San Marino when the AGS cars didn't set a time, and when there were only 7 cars left.

I didn't know Ligier had to prequalify in 1990.

Nor did I, only for 2 races apparently because I think Onyx pulled out after Hungary.

To be honest I'm quite shocked at the calibre of some teams who did have to pre-qualify - I remember Brabham did in 1991 (89 was fair enough as they were absent in 88), Arrows/Footwork did too. Did Ligier have to as well as some point in '91?

1989 was quite interesting season regarding pre-qualifying and qualifying itself. After all it was only three occasions where driver passed the pre-qualifying and failed to qualify for the race:
- Foitek in Brazil
- Gachot in Germany
- Alboreto in Japan

Yeah, and in Monaco, 3 of the 4 drivers who PQ'd scored points.

Modena 3rd
Caffi 4th
Brundle 6th (Should have got 3rd, was unlucky not to apparently)
Raphanel Ret
