Australian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Davies put in a solid effort to put his Williams in 4th, although a drag race between himself and Barrichello during the session proved that the Williams might not be anywhere near the Ferraris in the race. However, he’s not too worried, as a miscommunication during qualifying saw Schumacher exit the pits, and drive right into the path of Barrichello, preventing him from setting any faster times.

Race:

Davies felt confident of gaining a few spots at turn 1, but that was gone when Frentzen stalled, bringing out the yellows until the cars were on the run to turn 3. His assumption that the Ferraris would be faster was proved when Barrichello got alongside on the way to turn 6, where they collided and collected Ralf Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve. Davies came out of it in 5th, behind Ricardo Zonta. It didn’t take long for Barrichello to pass Verstappen and Salo, who had gotten in between him and Davies, and was right behind the Aussie with a few corners to go, but pitted for repairs. Davies continued, but decided it was a bad idea, because the car was now massively understeering. He lost 5 seconds in half a lap to Zonta, and had Diniz and Villeneuve looking for a way past. The pressure from Diniz was alleviated when he pitted, and Villeneuve ran wide at turn 3 on lap 3, losing ground to one Williams, while the other caught up. Davies stopped on lap 3, still ahead of Villeneuve, although that was only because Ralf hadn’t exactly been nice when trying to pass him, punting the BAR into the wall. Davies' suspension repairs took a while, and he was jumped by Eddie Irvine. He passed the Jag at turn 9, and set about chasing down the Arrows of Pedro de la Rosa. He found his way into 8th when Barrichello stopped again, and was now behind Ralf, who had just left the pits. Davies gained another spot when Diniz’s suspension went, but Davies had given up hope for at least one point, as he was 6 seconds behind Schumacher with half a lap to go. He eventually finished there, 7 seconds off Ralf and 4 ahead of Irvine.

Brazilian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

The two Williams drivers went opposite ways with their setups. Davies went for a low downforce, understeery setup, while Schumacher went for a high downforce oversteery setup. They proved that the Williams was at least capable of staying close to the McLarens and Ferraris, with Schumacher the fastest in the second sector, while Davies was fastest in the third. However, neither could stay that quick for a full lap, and so Davies managed to drag his car into third, while Schumacher didn’t even make the top 10. Mika Hakkinen snagged pole, edging out Rubens Barrichello.

1st: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): 1:09.847
2nd: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): +0.164

20th: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +3.784
21st: S. Jones (Jaguar): +3.935
22nd: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +4.184

Race:

Davies lost his spot to Michael Schumacher at the start, but a dive straight between Schumie and Hakkinen at the first corner saw him take the lead, but Hakkinen wasn’t too happy, as the move cost him a front wing. The lack of speed from the Williams showed, as Davies spent the entire lap with a red car in his mirror, pressuring him into a mistake. Hakkinen was still trundling around, trying to get back to the pits to get a new wing, but as Trulli came past to lap him, they collided, and while both could continue, Trulli would retire with suspension damage. Schumacher got past Davies in the second sector on lap 3, and immediately started to pull away. However, they had pulled out a large gap on Coulthard, who pitted at the end of the lap, handing third to Ricardo Zonta, who was 13 seconds behind Davies. Both Schumacher and Davies stopped on lap 4, emerging 9th and 10th, with Villeneuve, who had already stopped, just coming out of Curva do Sol. Davies managed to get in the slipstream of Schumacher and passed him down the straight, but when Villeneuve tried to follow him, Schumacher shut the door, succeeding only in spinning himself. A few drivers pitted on lap 5, promoting Davies to 7th. On lap 6, Davies passed quite a few slow cars, each with either engine or suspension difficulties. Arguably, he got lucky when he passed Coulthard’s McLaren with smoke billowing out of the engine a split second before the yellow flags came out. At the end of the lap, every driver in front of him pitted, putting him back in the lead, with Villeneuve still on his tail. He managed to hold him off on the second to last lap, but on the final lap, at the end of sector two, they came across Ricardo Zonta, whose engine had started to overheat on the previous lap, so he was coasting to the finish. As Davies came around, he didn’t see him, and drove straight into him. This gave Villeneuve the lead - and the win. Davies wasn’t the only one who hit Zonta, however - Michael Schumacher, smelling a second place, hit him too! This allowed Davies to sneak away, taking second (and his first non-win podium, and continuing his run of getting fastest lap whenever he scored points), and it promoted, of all people, Pedro de la Rosa’a Arrows onto the podium! Schumacher struggled to get going again, and by the time he had righted himself he was out of the points. The surprise of the day, however, from 21st on the grid, was Sammy Jones, scoring Jaguar’s first points, taking 4th place ahead of Frentzen and the other Arrows of Verstappen.

San Marino Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Rhys Davies arrived at Imola with low expectations, as this was one of the tracks where he struggled last year. To add to that, it was raining, but fortunately, Davies has a little bit of wet weather skill, and it showed in qualifying, putting his car on pole.

1st: R. Davies (Williams: 1:16.262
2nd: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): +0.292
3rd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +0.322
4th: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +0.437

10th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +1.364
11th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +1.554

20th: E. Irvine (Jaguar): +3.952
21st: J. Alesi (Prost): +4.010
22nd: S. Jones (Jaguar): +4.031

Race:

With the rain still coming down, a good start saw Davies stay ahead of Barrichello, and he quickly opened a lead through the chicanes. By the end of the lap, he had a 6 second lead, but he was amazed at how quickly the rain managed to stop, having only been coming down for half a lap, if that. By the time he pitted on lap 3, he was 8 seconds up on Barrichello, and had already lapped Fisichella, who seemed to have suspension troubles (my engineer wasn’t speaking to me for some reason…). He emerged in third, with Hakkinen now P1 and Fisichella just in front of him. He passed the Benetton into Villeneuve, and took back the lead when Hakkinen pitted. During that lap, the rain came back, giving Davies a new boost of speed, and he pulled out two seconds on Ralf, the new second placed driver, who had jumped Barrichello in the pits, in the first sector of lap 5 alone. The yellows came out because of a spin by Mazzacane on lap 6 at Variante Alta, forcing Davies to slow down, but they were gone by the time Ralf came past, slicing Davies’ lead in half. However, he managed to hold his lead for the last lap, although almost being killed by Coulthard as he tried to lap the McLaren at Tosa and a spin at Variante Bassa made the result look closer than it was. In the end it was a Williams 1-2, with Barrichello scoring his first points of the year in third. His Ferrari teammate Michael Schumacher was fourth, Alexander Wurz fifth, and Pedro de la Rosa finishing 6th, his third straight points finish, and the only driver to do so this year.

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 9:51.302
2nd: R. Schumacher (Williams): +2.788

2004: Round 6: Monaco

Qualifying:

Fairly early on in the session it became clear that it would take a really special lap to topple Jarno Trulli which Daniel Melrose nearly produced as he came just under 5 hundredths short of denying Janro Trulli his first pole position. Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso filled row 2 while Kimi Raikkonen was competitive for once in 5th. Takuma Sato found the wall at the Swimming Pool and didn't set a time.

Grid:
1. J. Trulli (Renault)
2. D. Melrose (Minardi-Cosworth)
3. J. Button (BAR-Honda)
4. F. Alonso (Renault)
5. K. Raikkonen (McLaren-Mercedes)
6. M. Schumacher (Ferrari)
7. R. Barrichello (Ferrari)
8. J. Pablo Montoya (Williams-BMW)
9. D. Coulthard (McLaren-Mercedes)
10. G. Fisichella (Sauber-Petronas)

12. R. Schumacher (Williams-BMW)
13. C. Klien (Jaguar-Cosworth)
14. O. Panis (Toyota)

17. F. Massa (Sauber-Petronas)
18. G. Pantano (Jordan-Ford)
19. Z. Baumgartner (Minardi-Cosworth)
20. T. Sato (BAR-Honda)

Race:

The 2004 Monaco Grand Prix was a race where fairytale results were met in equal measure of sheer brain fade and stupidity as the rain made the race chaotic from start to finish. Jarno Trulli avoided most of the chaos to record his first Grand Prix victory from Daniel Melrose who in his first trip to the Principality in an F1 car yet again showed his considerable talent, kept it out of the barrier in the torrid conditions and as a result inherited an impressive 2nd after Jenson Button found the wall midway through the race. Rubens Barrichello was classified 3rd despite a moment of sheer brain fade as he crashed at the Rascasse on the final lap on the Grand Prix. Toyota and Nick Heidfeld were the main beneficiaries of the chaos as Cristiano Da Matta was 4th, Heidfeld 5th and Olivier Panis 7th behind Juan Pablo Montoya. This race was also a day when you could be a long way down and still score a point as Fernando Alonso proved by finishing 8th but a mammoth 6 laps down. McLaren had a nightmare of a race with Coulthard out on lap 2 with Transmission failure while Kimi Raikkonen's electrics failed before half distance. Sauber didn't have it much better as both cars retired within a lap of eachother.

Results:
1. J. Trulli (Renault): 1h 57m 53.894s
2. D. Melrose (Minardi-Cosworth): +55.989
3. R. Barrichello (Ferrari): +2 LAPS*

Pre-Turkey:

The main news story was the news that Sir Frank Williams is reportedly looking for a replacement for Rubens Barrichello at the end of the season should he not pick up his game. The current favourite for the job is test driver Kazuki Nakajima but Heikki Kovalainen is reportedly interested in the seat. A much sadder news story came out of the Super Aguri camp as the team is said to be in financial trouble and may not see out the season.

Qualifying:

Daniel Melrose may have put his BMW in 4th place but nobody in the team, not even himself, took any confidence in the performance since Melrose has always considered himself as more of a one lap specialist. Up front it was Massa leading the way from Hamilton and Raikkonen while Jones disappointed in 7th. That was nothing compared to the sheer hell Rubens Barrichello was put through in his evil handling Williams as he put in one of the worst qualifying performances of his career to be on the back row of the grid.

Grid:
1. F. Massa (Ferrari)
2. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)

Pre-Race: One of the most incredible and saddest scenes in Formula One history took place just 90 minutes before race start as all of Super Aguri's equipment were seized by creditors and the team declared bankrupt which left everyone on the lurch. Davidson immediately returned to his Honda testing job but this could spell the end of Takuma Sato's career as nobody seems to be taking any interest in his services for next season.

Race:

Compared to the scenes before the start the race was a dreary affair as Felipe Massa, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonne locked out the podium with 3 completely different strategies. Massa was the only front runner to gamble on the one-stopper and it paid off while Raikkonen checkmated himself out of the equation for the win with a 3 stop strategy. Infact the Iceman was lucky to even end up on the podium after Sammy Jones' car sprung a water leak mid race which eliminated him on the spot. Daniel Melrose showed competitve pace to finish 4th while Toro Rosso were the best of the midfield in 5th and 6th. Glock drove a faultless race to finish 7th while Frank Zimmer scored yet another point in 8th ahead of Fernando Alonso whose pointless season contines.

British Grand Prix

Qualifying:

With the rain starting to come down about halfway through the session, all the fastest lap times were set during the first 15 minutes. Except for three, that is - Ralf Schumacher, Rhys Davies and Sammy Jones. The Williams cars had no speed in the dry, and Davies managed to improve from 16th to 11th in the wet, while Schumacher went from 15th to 7th. In fact, Davies was the fastest in both the first and second sectors - but, despite a fairly high downforce setup, was losing a second and a bit in the final sector.

1st: D. Coulthard (McLaren): 1:16.698
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +0.198
3rd: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): +0.311
4th: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +0.466
5th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +0.839
6th: R. Zonta (BAR): +0.949
7th: R. Schumacher (Williams): +0.979
8th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +1.101
9th: A. Wurz (Benetton): +1.288
10th: J. Verstappen (Arrows): +1.615
11th: R. Davies (Williams): +1.676
12th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +1.738
13th: M. Salo (Sauber): +1.803
14th: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +1.904
15th: J. Trulli (Jordan): +2.661
16th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +2.828
17th: S. Jones (Jaguar): +3.571
18th: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +3.618
19th: M. Gene (Minardi): +4.029
20th: J. Alesi (Prost): +4.340
21st: E. Irvine (Jaguar): +4.449
22nd: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +4.588

Race:

Despite the dry start, Williams put Davies onto wet tyres, while everyone else, including Ralf was on dries. The excuse: heavy rain predicted. Davies got up to 5th by turn 1, but as he tried to pass Fisichella into Magotts, they collided and spun, with Davies rejoining in 8th. Contact with Villeneuve at Vale saw Wurz get past as well, but the Austrian spun at Luffield, giving Davies the spot back. While Michael Schumacher took the lead from Coulthard early in the lap, the rain started to fall at the start of lap 2, making an interesting situation up front. While Barrichello pitted for wets, Schumacher spun at Chapel, bringing out the yellow flags. Davies didn’t exactly notice, and was very nearly pinged for speeding. Davies, when he passed Villeneuve successfully this time at Vale, was now fourth (someone else stopped with Barrichello), with Ralf in front. They moved into second and third when Hakkinen pitted, at the same time as the rain stopping, although the track was still very wet. With Coulthard pitting, Schumacher inherited the lead, but Davies spun when he hit the curbing at Brooklands, losing the spot to Villeneuve, but staying ahead of Frentzen. Villeneuve and Davies both stopped on lap 4, with a massive gap back to de la Rosa, after Frentzen’s engine started to belch smoke, almost simultaneously with Salo’s, at the other end of the field. (I’d like to point out that there was a small glitch here, because on lap 4, I was on wets, but as soon as I entered pit lane, they turned into dries. Hmmm…) While he trundled down pit lane, the rain started to fall again, and to his horror, he saw his pit crew getting dry tyres ready. Despite emerging fourth, he couldn’t get up to speed without ending up sideway, and cause a pretty big pileup as Hakkinen, de la Rosa, Alesi etc. all tried to get past. The repeated impacts pretty much destroyed his suspension (and his gearbox…) This meant that he would have to pit again, and he did so from 13th place, emerging ahead of Frentzen, in 17th. There was a “what is wrong with you!?” moment when the crew again put dries on, but since the track was now fairly dry again, he wasn’t as angry as he could have been. However, he breezed past Heidfeld on the way out of Abbey, and noticed that he still had wets. He also realised that he had pulled out 7 seconds in one sector over Frentzen, who was fighting Barrichello. He passed Alesi, Irvine and Trulli on the main straight to get to 13th, and set about chasing down Sammy Jones. At this point it was the final lap, and he had 11 seconds to make up. But then there was an anti-miracle - the rain started to fall once again! Suddenly it wasn’t about catching Jones, but staying ahead of Trulli, who was just 4 seconds behind. He managed to do that, but wasn’t very happy with Williams at the moment, especially as Schumacher won the race…

Re: FORCDA 2010 Season

Pre-Monaco:

Williams' season of woes continues as yet again Sir Frank meets the World Press putting Barrichello on notice. Williams' test driver Kazuki Nakajima is expected to get the drive at his home race later this season at Fuji while rumour has it that Heikki Kovalainen might get the 2nd Williams seat next season. The other major news story was Toyota picked up Super Aguri refugee Takuma Sato and made him their 2nd test driver alongside Kamui Kobayashi but nobody expects it to lead to anything more significant.

Qualifying:

Monaco has always been Daniel Melrose's strongest circuit but this year he was under pressure to deliver more than ever. And deliver he did with one of his finest laps despite suffering from a rather nasty chest infection to score pole by just under 2 tenths from Felipe Massa. Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen share row 2 while Sebastian Vettel showed his obvious talent by qualifying 7th only half a second away from pole while putting teammate Sebastian Bourdais to shame. Heikki Kovalainen and Michael Ammermuller both struggled badly in 18th and 20th as the pair were split by Phoenix McAllister who has been quiet as of late in the Force India.

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. F. Massa (Ferrari)
3. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
4. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
5. R. Kubica (BMW)
6. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)

19. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari)
20. M. Ammermuller (RBR-Renault)

Qualifying 2:

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)

18. S. Bourdais (STR-Ferrari)
19. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari)
20. M. Ammermuller (RBR-Renault)

Race:

Daniel Melrose has always been very quick at Monaco; frighteningly quick infact. Despite 2008 being one of his more sedate performances and despite fighting an illness all weekend he still won it by nearly 25 seconds ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa. Once Sammy Jones checkmated himself out of the equation on lap 19 on a 3 stop plan and Melrose checkmated the Ferraris during the first stint it was simply a matter of staying within touch of the one-stoppers and using his superior pace to get ahead of them. However Melrose never knew the definition of "hold position" and it showed as he put two brilliant moves on Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica at the swimming pool within a few laps of each other making his win all the more secure. Hamilton got ahead of Kubica at the stops while Fernando Alonso was best of the rest in 6th. Sebastian Vettel continued his domination over teammate Bourdais by finishing 7th while Frank Zimmer continued his fine form this season by collecting the final point ahead of teammate Button. Once it became clear the three stopper wasn't working Jones became a helpless lamb to the slaughter as he never got track position to make it work as he ended up an abmysal 15th.

Results:
1. D. Melrose (BMW): 1h 39m 47.213
2. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari): +24.670

Spanish Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Catalunya is a track Davies likes. A lot. And it showed, as be put in a dominant performance to take his second pole of the year, beating Michael Schumacher by nearly 2 seconds. It was in fact quick enough to put the four slowest drivers outside 107%, but they were allowed to start. Strnage how none of the four was a Minardi…

1st: R. Davies (Williams): +1:13.390
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +1.996
3rd: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): +2.168
4th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +2.228
5th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +2.423
6th: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +2.714
7th: R. Schumacher (Williams): +2.836
8th: A. Wurz (Benetton): +2.933
9th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +3.240
10th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +3.292
11th: J. Verstappen (Arrows): +3.302
12th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +3.388
13th: M. Salo (Sauber): +3.391
14th: R. Zonta (BAR): +3.612
15th: J. Trulli (Jordan): +3.840
16th: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +3.886
17th: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +5.110
18th: M. Gene (Minardi): +5.137
19th: E. Irvine (Jaguar): +5.154
20th: J. Alesi (Prost): +5.231
21st: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +5.235
22nd: S. Jones (Jaguar): +5.374

Race:

After an average performance here last year, Davies held the lead into the first corner and kept it to a second by the end of the lap. Barrichello’s run of bad luck continued as he was forced to pit for repairs when he collided with David Coulthard at the start. Schumacher tried to pass Davies at La Caixa on lap 2 that resulted in both spinning, although Davies would hold the lead, with Michael slipping down the order, as he managed to find the wall. Nick Heidfeld encountered some suspension trouble on lap 3, and Coulthard stopped that lap, leaving the two Williams cars in first and second. Davues pitted on lap 4, emerging in fourth, although he was right beside Fisichella, easily taking third from him at turn 1. This left him 8 seconds behind Barrichello, who was recovering spectacularly after his unscheduled stop. He took second back at the end of lap 5 when Ralf pitted, although his teammate was right on his tail. Barrichello was still 7 seconds up the road with two laps to run, although considering his lead, the Ferrari crew might not have refuelled him at his stop. His suspicions were confirmed when the Ferrari put in a blindingly quick lap, to stretch the lead to 10 seconds. On the last lap, Davies was able to close the gap, and continue his run of getting fastest lap everytime he scored points.

European Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Despite 13 cars being outside the 107% time, all were allowed to start as the rain was so heavy only one driver got any laps done without spinning - Rhys Davies (that’s the logical explanation to being 3-5 seconds faster than the Ferraris and McLarens).

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 1:14.087
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +3.796
3rd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +4.350
4th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +4.552

22nd: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +8.180

Race:

The only difference between the start of Davies between this year and last year was Davies was already P1. He even managed to get the same 6 second margin over the #3 Ferrari. The big difference was that said Ferrari’s engine didn’t go boom on lap 2. Davies stopped on lap 4 with a 15 second lead over Schumacher. He would emerge second, 14 seconds behind Schumacher but just 2 ahead of Coulthard. The rain had started just before race start, but by the half way mark it was absolutely bucketing down, with lightning in the background and the track almost undriveable. Michael stopped on lap 5, and was passed by both Davies and Ralf, with Coulthard stopping at the same time. The rain started to ease off over the next few laps, but the track was still ridiculously wet. Ralf stopped on lap 6, giving second back to Michael, emerging 4th but losing the spot to Wurz at the first corner. Davies would manage to keep the car on the road for the last two laps, winning by 24 seconds, almost identical to last year.

It's minutes. The races are (annoyingly) only 6-8 laps long.

Monaco Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Last year, Davies was unable to get one good flyer in withour hitting a wall somewhere. This time he managed to get three good laps out of four.

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 1:16.563
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +0.232
3rd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +0.306
4th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +0.562

10th: R. Zonta (BAR): +1.592
11th: J. Trulli (Jordan): +1.697
12th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +1.743

20th: J. Alesi (Prost): +3.855
21st: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +4.008
22nd: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +4.834

Race:
The first ever truly awful start from Davies saw him fall back to third, but when Michael Schumacher spun of his own accord at turn 1, he managed to avoid him to take back the lead, although the yellows were out all the way to Massenet thanks to Coulthar, Salo and Alesi getting involved, all of them retiring. Schumacher managed to hold second purely by holding everyone else up, although he spun again at the hairpin, bringing out the yellows again, but still staying second. Over the next few laps, every driver spun at some point, including Davies. Frentzen was forced to pit for suspension repairs as a result, and Verstappen lost his front and rear wings after a particularly big smash (he would retire a few laps later anyway. Davies pitted on lap 4, with a 9 second advantage over Schumacher. Schumacher however spun at the swimming pool, retiring on the spot and giving second to Barrichello, although Rubens pitted as well. This meant that Davies emerged from the pits still in the lead, 8 seconds up the road from Zonta. On lap 5, Davies was very nearly killed by Hakkinen as he left the pits, a lap down. When Zonta stopped, second was inherited by Pedro Diniz, but it became Ralf’s turn to take second when Diniz stopped on lap 6. The fact that he was anywhere near the points let alone a potential podium was amazing, as his engine had been belching smoke foe several laps. As a result, he was holding up Barrichello and Zonta to the tune of 5 seconds a lap, allowing Davies to take a comfortable victory.

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 12:02.135
2nd: R. Schumacher (Williams): +31.197
3rd: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): +31.692

= 8th: A. Wurz - 8
10th: M. Hakkinen - 7
11th: G. Fisichella - 5
12th: S. Jones - 3
13th: H. Frentzen - 2
= 14th: P. Diniz - 1
= 14th: J. Verstappen - 1

Constructors’ Standings:
1st: Williams - 71
2nd: Ferrari - 41
3rd: BAR - 22
4th: McLaren - 19
5th: Benetton - 13
6th: Arrows - 10
7th: Jaguar - 3
8th: Jordan - 1
9th: Sauber - 1

After the race came the time for new contracts. Davies received three offers - one to stay at Williams, a refreshed offer to go to McLaren, and one to go to Ferrari. Of course, since he was leading the championship in a Williams, and Williams were leading the constructors, he chose to stay with the team. After all, apart from Silverstone, they treated him well. So, Davies would remain with the team for the rest of the season, starting with the Canadian GP.

Canadian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Somewhat sad isn’t it, when someone can go 2 seconds faster than the rest of the field, while still being 2 seconds slower than he was in practice…

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 1:13.378
2nd: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): +2.018
3rd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +2.200
4th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +2.324

10th: J. Verstappen (Arrows): +3.571
11th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +3.692

21st: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +5.877
22nd: E. Irvine (Jaguar): +6.214

Race:
Davies held off Barrichello successfully at the start, in doing so allowing the Ferraris to swap spots. It quickly became clear that Davies wasn’t nearly as quick in race trim, and couldn’t shake the Ferraris. The pressure was relieved somewhat when Schumacher pitted on lap 2, while Barrichello had made a mistake on the way out of the hairpin earlier. Unfortunately, Davies hit the Wall of Champions on lap 3, hard (other victims during the race include M. Schumacher, Coulthard, Jones, Villeneuve and Frentzen). While he was fine to continue, Barrichello had disappeared up the road and Coulthard was now all over Davies. That pressure was released when Coulthard went straight into the wall at the hairpin, giving third to Fisichella. Barrichello pitted on lap 4, as did Davies and Fisichella. Barrichello would still hold the lead, but Alesi and Ralf Schumacher would get into second and third. Alesi stopped on lap 5, but Ralf had already stopped, meaning Davies was effectively sentenced to third place. Over the last few laps, he would take a few seconds out of Schumacher, but would never get close to taking second.

1st: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): 10:09.916
2nd: R. Schumacher (Williams): +9.594
3rd: R. Davies (Williams): +15.949

11th: M. Salo (Sauber): +57.955
12th: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +1:01.760
13th: J. Verstappen (Arrows): +1:02.228
14th: A. Wurz (Benetton): +1:03.588
15th: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +1:06.614
16th: J. Trulli (Jordan): +1:13.926
17th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +1:14.415
18th: S. Jones (Jaguar): +1 LAP
19th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +1 LAP
DNF: H. Frentzen (Jordan): Accident
DNF: R. Zonta (BAR): Collision
DNF: N. Heidfeld (Prost): Suspension

Pre-Canada:

The pre-race buildup to Canada was relatively quiet as the only news item was that BMW test driver Dave Simpson could drive the Number 1 BMW should Melrose be declared unfit to race. However Sid Watkins allowed Melrose to race at Canada so it quickly disapated.

Qualifying:

Any doubts anyone had about Melrose's fitness were dismissed within the first 5 minutes of qualifying as Melrose set the fastest and 2nd fastest laps of the session to take pole by almost 2 tenths ahead of Felipe Massa. Sammy Jones has a good return to form in 3rd while Kimi Raikkonen was disappointing in 8th. That was nothing compared to the continuing fall of Renault as Alonso and Kovalainen were only able to achieve 16th and 17th.

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. F. Massa (Ferrari)
3. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
4. R. Kubica (BMW)
5. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
6. S. Vettel (STR-Ferrari)
7. M. Ammermuller (RBR-Renault)

17. H. Kovalainen (Renault)
18. R. Barrichello (Williams-Toyota)
19. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari)
20. A. Sutil (Force India-Ferrari)

Qualifying 2:

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. R. Kubica (BMW)
3. F. Massa (Ferrari)
4. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
5. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)

21st: E. Irvine (Jaguar): +3.437
22nd: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +3.741

Race:
It was very hot on race day, and when Ralf stalled, the yellow flags came out almost before the lights turned on, yet Mika Hakkinen managed to pass the four cars in front to take the lead. All the leaders, including Davies, were running very hot, and Schumacher spun at the final corner thanks to brakes that were burning up. This allowed Davies back onto a podium spot, and Frentzen into fourth place. Hakkinen and Barrichello pulled out a few seconds on Davies, Frentzen and Coulthard, with Villeneuve and Schumacher not far behind. Well, until Schumacher ran up the backside of Villeneuve late on lap 2, with his brakes again failing to stop the car. Davies’ brakes were also struggling, when on lap 3 he couldn’t get it stopped at 180. This allowed Frentzen into third, although Coulthard didn’t get past. However, at Chateau d’eau, Davies spun, and Coulthard, Zonta, Wurz and Verstappen all got involved. Coulthard was the only car to emerge fully unscathed, with Verstappen and Zonta taking minimal damage, Davies between then having a demolished suspension but able to go on and Wurz needing a new front wing. Davies pitted from 6th on lap 4, ahead of Zonta at the time (thanks to a collision at Chateau d’eau earlier on the lap), emerging 10th. Wurz retired with suspension damage that hadn’t been picked up during his stop, although he’d already been a lap down. On lap 5, 4 drivers pitted, all from in front of Davies, with Verstappen emerging ahead, but a big spin at Adelaide saw him need a new rear wing. That wasn’t all, as Hakkinen’s engine gave out on the way to Adelaide early on lap 5, giving Barrichello the lead. At least until his engine went as well! This meant that, when Verstappen pitted, he was the race leader. His stop gave the lead to Salo, who had Coulthard on his tail, but with both stopping on lap 6, Heinz-Harald Frentzen found himself in the lead, with Davies second, some 8 seconds down the road! Frentzen had stopped on lap 4, so as long as his car held on for just two more laps, the race win was virtually his. And despite Davies cutting the gap to 5 seconds, the Jordan did hold on, and Frentzen scored his first victory. Salo managed to hold third to take his first points of the season, with Schumacher fourth, Trulli making it two in the points for Jordan with fifth (and his first of the season as well) and Villeneuve rounding out the top 6.

Austrian Grand Prix

Qualiying:

Jaguar have temporarily replaced Eddie Irvine, as despite scoring 5 top 10 results to Sammy Jones’ one, he still hasn’t scored, while Jones picked up fourth at Interlagos. Their test driver Luciano Burti has been hired, and if he can get a good enough result, he may stay for the rest of the season.
In other news, rain was forecasted for qualifying, but it never happened, making everybody look like idiots with their wet tyres. Barrichello took his second straight pole, edging out Hakkinen and Davies.

1st: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): 1:05.792
2nd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +0.230
3rd: R. Davies (Williams): +0.341
4th: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +0.481
5th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +0.588
6th: R. Schumacher (Williams): +0.600

9th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +0.932
10th: R. Zonta (BAR): +1.432
11th: M. Salo (Sauber): +1.474
12th: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +1.500
13th: J. Verstappen (Arrows): +1.614
14th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +1.663
15th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +1.919

19th: L. Burti (Jaguar): +3.190
20th: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +3.282
21st: S. Jones (Jaguar): +3.308
22nd: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +3.984

Race:

Barrichello was unstoppable on the run to turn 1, but Davies managed to get past Hakkinen for second. Barrichello ran wide at the hairpin, allowing Davies and Hakkinen in front, before Hakkinen took the lead a few corners later when Davies went into the gravel. The top 4 of Hakkinen, Barrichello, Davies and Schumacher were miles faster than the rest of the field, until Schumacher and Davies collided at the last corner, with Davies losing some time, and Schumacher losing some track position, with Villeneuve gaining fourth. The top 3 were lapping at roughly the same speed, which was bad news for Davies since he was still 3 seconds behind Hakkinen and Barrichello. However, all three were on wet tyres, as rain had been predicted, yet there were virtually no clouds in the sky. Ralf Schumacher, on slicks, was easily the fastest on track, but still stuck behind his brother. They ran a few laps without anything happening until Michael Schumacher spun into retirement on lap 3. Hakkinen and Davies both stopped on lap 4, both taking slick tyres, with Barrichello staying out longer. Hakkinen emerged in 6th, with Davies 8th, the Jordan of Trulli in between. Marc Gene had been running a remarkable 3rd, when his suspension gave out and he had to trundle around to the pits. Zonta pitted on lap 5, and Trulli’s engine started to overheat, giving Davies 5th, now with Hakkinen in front. An attempt at a pass into the hairpin when horribly wrong when they collided, with Hakkinen managing to continue but badly damaged suspension for Davies, who now had to complete 2 and a half laps with a massively oversteering car. Barrichello stopped on lap 6, with Hakkinen getting in front, but Ralf Schumacher now held the lead simply because he’d been on slicks the entire time. He couldn’t draw out the lead over the last few laps, as Hakkinen and Barrichello were on the same pace, with Davies slightly slower, and so the German took the win with a Finn, Brazilian, Aussie, Italian and Canadian filling the points spots.

1st: R. Schumacher (Williams): 9:56.272

Due to GP4 hating me I've had to revert to an older version of Montreal (2006 rather than 2008). This means that laptimes have become 4 seconds faster so I'll have to attempt the round yet again.

Qualifying 3:

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. F. Massa (Ferrari)
3. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
4. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
5. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
6. R. Kubica (BMW)
7. S. Vettel (STR-Ferrari)
8. F. Alonso (Renault)
9. M. Webber (RBR-Renault)
10. F. Zimmer (Honda)
11. R. Barrichello (Williams-Toyota)
12. J. Button (Honda)
13. T. Glock (Toyota)
14. J. Trulli (Toyota)
15. N. Rosberg (Williams-Toyota)
16. H. Kovalainen (Renault)
17. S. Bourdais (STR-Ferrari)
18. A. Sutil (Force India-Ferrari)
19. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari)
20. M. Ammermuller (RBR-Renault)

Race:

Daniel Melrose may have picked up his 33rd win, 35th pole and 26th fastest lap as well as lead every lap of the Grand Prix but nothing screamed out or even suggested it was a domination. Infact his win was down to strategic genius much like his victory at several races in his Ferrari days in 2005. Here in Canada he realised that he could make his 26 lap fuel load stretch another 10 or so laps without stressing the tyres too much and that was as far as the race was concerned. Felipe Massa finished 2nd while Lewis Hamilton kept in touch with the championship leader in 3rd. Rubens Barrichello scored Williams' first point of the season in 8th while the Dietrich Mateschitz's merry men had a torrid afternoon with not one of their cars finishing in the top 10.

Results:
1. D. Melrose (BMW): 1h 28m 11.402
2. F. Massa (Ferrari): +24.438
3. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes): +41.649
4. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari): +43.882
5. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes): +46.719
6. R. Kubica (BMW): +55.804

14. M. Webber (RBR-Renault): +1 LAP
15. A. Sutil (Force India-Ferrari): +1 LAP
16. T. Glock (Toyota): +1 LAP
17. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari): +2 LAPS
DNF. M. Ammermuller (RBR-Renault)
DNF. H. Kovalainne (Renault)
DNF. S. Vettel (STR-Ferrari)

Pole: D. Melrose (BMW): 1:14.417
Fastest Lap: D. Melrose (BMW): 1:13.904
Leaders: D. Melrose: 1-70 (Total: 70)

Championship Standings:

German Grand Prix

Qualifying:

I don’t know how Jag is measuring performance, but Burti has been given the sack after one race and Eddie Irvine is back in his car. Hockenheim is one of the tracks that Davies just doesn’t like to drive at, but this time he had an advantage - wet weather. He has already shown that he has wet weather speed - and proved it by taking pole at his second least favourite track by more than a second.

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 1:35.365
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +1.440
3rd: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): +1.654
4th: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +1.724
5th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +1.810
6th: A. Wurz (Benetton): +2.181
7th: R. Zonta (BAR): +2.194
8th: R. Schumacher (Williams): +2.198
9th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +2.369
10th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +3.083
11th: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +3.123
12th: J. Verstappen (Arrows): +3.166
13th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +3.293
14th: J. Trulli (Jordan): +3.516
15th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +3.803
16th: M. Salo (Sauber): +4.921
17th: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +6.019
18th: J. Alesi (Prost): +6.103
19th: M. Gene (Minardi): +6.218
20th: E. Irvine (Jaguar): +6.622
21st: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +6.811
22nd: S. Jones (Jaguar): +7.183

Race:

The one thing that really annoys me about this game is the lack of strategy options. It locks me into a certain strategy and then puts wet tyres on when the entire field is on slicks. So, as a result, Schumacher led into turn one, but Hakkinen couldn’t get past Davies legitimately and both spun as a result, with Davies rejoining in 8th, although his superior straight line speed saw him get back to 5th. He passed Coulthard for 4th at the second chicane, although he lost several spots in the final sector since he had no grip on the wets at all. A few more collisions with Fisichella and de la Rosa saw him drop to 8th, when on the way to the third chicane, his engine started to belch blue smoke. He managed to continue at near full speed, but the problem would force him to pit a lap earlier than scheduled. He was going to continue, but seeing how quickly he was caught by Jones and Alesi was enough to force him in. Alesi followed him in, and got out ahead, in 17th - which became a bigger gap when Irvine tried to pass Davies on his past the pit exit, only to spin them both. However, when Jones’ car encountered suspension troubles, they both moved up. Davies then passed both Prosts on the run to the third chicane, now 15th and 11 seconds behind Gene. He gained 14th with three laps to go when Mazzacane pitted. That became 13th when Michael Schumacher’s suspension gave out. In the space of one lap, Davies cut Gene’s lead from 11 seconds to just 2, and passed him at the second chicane for 12th. Of course, he was nowhere near the pace of the leader, with Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher battling for the lead and trading fastest laps. At the end of the lap, he passed the slow Fisichella, who also had suspension dramas, before the sheer uselessness of the car through the final sector was revealed when Gene took the spot back, around the outside of the hairpin. From there to the start line, he re-opened a two second gap, but Davies passed him again at the first chicane. However, this was for 9th, not 11th, as Ralf and Coulthard, while squabbling for third, collided and retired, taking poor old Jarno Trulli with them. Davies would manage to hold off Gene through the final sector to take 9th place, his third non-points finish of the year. To add insult to injury, Barrichello won the race…

1st: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): 9:31.991
2nd: A. Wurz (Benetton): +26.587

2004: Round 7: Europe

Qualifying:

Rain has always been the great equaliser and today proved no exception as Daniel Melrose put in a scorching lap in the torrential rain to be 1.3 seconds faster than Sato in 2nd and over 3 seconds faster than Michael Schumacher in 3rd. Kimi Raikkonen put in a similarily stunning performance in 4th while both Toyotas did a credible job to qualify 8th (Panis) and 10th (Da Matta). Rubens Barrichello was disappointing in 12th.

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (Minardi-Cosworth)
2. T. Sato (BAR-Honda)
3. M. Schumacher (Ferrari)
4. K. Raikkonen (McLaren-Mercedes)
5. J. Trulli (Renault)

Race:

A short review, since I lost the good one as well. Hakkinen and Fisichella got blinding starts to be 1-2 into turn 1, but Fisi spun at turn 2, giving second to Davies and third to Villeneuve, who also got a good start. On lap 2, Davies caught and passed Hakkinen, with Villeneuve also getting through. Both pitted on lap 3, along with Fisichella, with Davies emerging 6th, then 5th when he passed Heidfeld. Unfortunately, he was struck by a big engine problem that forced to pit again. And then the same thing happened on the next lap. Eventually, he emerged 20th, but Verstappen's retirement on the penultimate lap and a pass on Mazzacane at final corner got him to 18th.

1st: M. Hakkinen
2nd: J. Villeneuve
3rd: R. Schumacher
4th: S. Jones
5th: A. Wurz
6th: H. Frentzen
7th: D. Coulthard
8th: R. Zonta
9th: M. Salo
10th: P. De la Rosa
11th: P. Diniz
12th: N. Heidfeld
13th: M. Gene
14th: M. Schumacher
15th: E. Irvine
16th: R. Barrichello
17th: J. Alesi
18th: R. Davies
19th: G. Mazzacane
20th: J. Trulli
21st: J. Verstappen (engine)
DNF: G. Fisichella (suspension)

Verstappen retired on lap 7 of 8, enough to be classified. Trulli was the only lapped car after an unscheduled stop from 18th for suspension repairs, although Mazzacane, Davies and Alesi were all very close to being lapped. Don't ask how Jones got to 4th.

Drivers' Championship:
1st: R. Davies - 55

3rd: R. Barrichello - 46

What happened, exactly? Codemasters games have always been far too strict on penalties when the game actually decides to hand them out - I was disqualified for illegal blocking once, even though there was a crashed car stopping me from going forward, and another car crashed into me from behind, so I couldn't move at all.

In my own F1 2010 season, I'm currently leading the World Championship for Lotus in my first season on the highest AI difficulty (although I do have assists on), leading Hamilton by about 15 points or so coming out of Valencia. I won the first race of the season in Bahrain, finished 3rd in Australia, struggled for the next 3 races and dropped to 4th after DNF'ing in Spain. Then, after qualifying 21st in Monaco, I got a storming start in the rain, and was up to 4th by the end of lap 2, albeit with a damaged wing. I still forced my way past Button, and a lap or two after, Hamilton and Webber, who were 1st and 2nd, crashed into each other, handing me the lead. From there, I crusied to my second win, holding up the entire field to the point that Vettel and Massa crashed into each other, allowing Kubica to take 2nd and Sutil 3rd.

I had a decent race in Turkey, coming 5th, before qualifying on pole and winning in Canada (for some reason I'm very good around Montreal, in F1 Challenge I usually take pole there by about 5-6 seconds). I pretty much copied Kobayashi's real-life strategy in Valencia, although without the safety car, but I still improved what would've been a 5th or 6th into a 3rd place finish.
Canon manager for the PMMF... I guess...

Belgian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

In keeping with the tradition of putting the stupid tracks in the middle of the season, we go to Spa, Davies’ least favourite track. And for once, it was the Williams of Ralf Schumacher, not Davies, who was fighting for pole. Although he did get beaten by both Ferraris. And Hakkinen. Davies meanwhile was a solid 12th, easily his worst qualifying performance of the year (I think. Silverstone might have been worse).

1st: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): 1:38.496
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +0.319
3rd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +0.515
4th: R. Schumacher (Williams): +0.716
5th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +0.842
6th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +1.031
7th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +1.122
8th: R. Zonta (BAR): +1.126
9th: A. Wurz (Benetton): +1.204
10th: J. Trulli (Jordan): +1.388
11th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +1.785
12th: R. Davies (Williams): +2.164
13th: M. Salo (Sauber): +2.330
14th: J. Verstappen (Arrows): +2.390
15th: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +2.684
16th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +3.187
17th: S. Jones (Jaguar): +3.845
18th: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +3.900
19th: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +4.424
20th: J. Alesi (Prost): +4.790
21st: M. Gene (Minardi): +5.776
22nd: E. Irvine (Jaguar): +5.869

Race:

Off the start, Salo and both Arrows drivers made a nuisance of themselves, causing an accident that involved quite a few cars, including Davies. The unjust bit was that de la Rosa ended up ahead of everyone involved, except for Villeneuve, but he lost his rear wing anyway and had to let everyone past. This left Davies still 12th, between de la Rosa and Verstappen. The big winner though was Jones, who slotted through to be 10th, which became 8th when Fisichella and Michael Schumacher pitted. Davies moved to 10th, and then 9th when he passed de la Rosa at La Source. Trulli, Ralf, Barrichello and Wurz stopped on lap 2, getting Jones to 4th and Davies 6th, unable to pass Barrichello and just ahead of Ralf. He didn’t stay there for long, since his car was still quick through the first and third sectors where the only real corners were the Bus Stop and La Source, but the damage sustained from the melee at the start had taken its toll, and Davies was struggling with an ill-handling car through the second sector. Mika Salo retired on lap 3 when his engine went bang, and Diniz, Davies and Irvine all pitted. Davies came out between them in 10th place, although much closer to Diniz than he had been all race. He managed to catch him at Les Combes on lap 5, while Diniz was being held up by the 7th placed Jordan of Trulli. Davies managed to pass both, for 7th place, after Fisichella pitted with suspension problems. In front was Jones, on course for another point. Then came some absolutely brilliant news - Barrichello’s suspension had very nearly packed up, while he was leading! He managed to trundle around to the pits, but Hakkinen took the lead, Jones moved to fifth and Davies got into the points. The last lap began, with Diniz still right behind Davies, and Jones several seconds up the road. The only thing that kept the Williams ahead was its speed through Eau Rouge and down the straight, building up a big enough lead that when Davies went off at Stavelot for the first time that afternoon, it wasn’t enough to cost him the point.

1st: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): 10:33.286
2nd: R. Schumacher (Williams): +9.143
3rd: A. Wurz (Benetton): +10.660

Pre-France:

The rumour mill has turned its attention to the Renault Squad which are frankly in trouble. So far Alonso has scored a paltry 5 points while Kovy hasn't done much better with 3. Apparently Alonso is looking for a way out with his eyes set on Ferrari while Heikki Kovalainen is rumoured to be Williams bound. Alonso has the added complication that he is under contract for next year at Renault but Jenson Button in the past has proven that contracts mean nothing.

Round 8: France

Qualifying:

Once you think about it you expect Daniel Melrose to be pulling out these types of laps day in, day out. And on closer analysis he is performing to expectations as he took his 5th pole of the season ahead of the Ferraris and McLarens. Jones gone one-up on Hamilton while Kubica was outqualified by Vettel. Further down Williams were stranded in 16th and 17th while Jenson Button will start last on the grid.

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. F. Massa (Ferrari)
3. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
4. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
5. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
6. S. Vettel (STR-Ferrari)
7. R. Kubica (BMW)
8. J. Trulli (Toyota)
9. S. Bourdais (STR-Ferrari)
10. F. Alonso (Renault)
11. M. Webber (RBR-Renault)
12. H. Kovalainen (Renault)
13. T. Glock (Toyota)
14. M. Ammermuller (RBR-Renault)
15. F. Zimmer (Honda)
16. R. Barrichello (Williams-Toyota)
17. N. Rosberg (Williams-Toyota)
18. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari)
19. A. Sutil (Force India-Ferrari)
20. J. Button (Honda)

Race:

The last 3 races have been incredlibly telling about the mental state of Daniel Melrose. The Australian really fell off the edge of the earth during the final thrid of last season and the first quarter of this season. Infact between last year's Turkish Grand Prix and this year's Turkish Grand Prix he only won 2 from 11 races. However after his dismal performance at the Spanish GP something clicked inside his head and since then he has been nigh-on unstoppable as he's outpaced, outraced and outthought his rivals to 3 of the best victories of his career.

Here Felipe Massa probably had the pace to win the race but at no point did the Brazilian had track position over Melrose as Melrose and his race engineer checkmated Massa out of the equation by staying out longer at both stops while Hamilton checkmated himself out of the equation at the start by being outdone by the fast starting Vettel while Vettel himself, Raikkonen, Jones and Kubica shot themselves in the foot by pitting before lap 20 which meant Hamilton leappfrogged the lot of them. Jones and Kubica then compounded their problems by crashing on consecutive laps.

Infact it was a race of attrition as most of the midfield simply imploded as both Hondas blew up while both Toro Rossos, Rosberg and Glock all had meetings with the wall at Estoril. In the end the unfancied Renaults took 5th and 6th while Red Bull scored a double points finish with Webber just ahead of Ammermuller and Trulli.

Results:
1. D. Melrose (BMW): 1h 29m 48.866
2. F. Massa (Ferrari): +2.711

Italian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Davies has always liked Monza. Maybe it’s the simplicity of the design, or maybe just the sheer speed of the track. Either way, Davies showed that on a good track, he could annihilate the rest of the field by 2 seconds.

1st: R. Davies (Ferrari): 1:12.525
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +2.538
3rd: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): +2.770
4th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +2.857
5th: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +2.927

10th: J. Trulli (Jordan): +4.134
11th: R. Schumacher (Williams): +4.152

21st: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +6.685
22nd: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +6.812

Race:

Schumacher got the better start, but Davies got back past at Rettifilo. Immediately, he set about extending his lead, and it was out to 2 seconds at the end of the lap. Mazzacane retired when he found his way into the wall at the second Lesmo, and Ralf’s engine blew at the Parabolica. Davies’ lead was extended to 7 seconds over Coulthard when Schumacher and Hakkinen collided on the way out of the Parabolica on lap 2, and both pitted. Davies pitted from 9 seconds in front of Coulthard on lap 3, emerging still P1, since Coulthard and the third-placed Wurz stopped as well. His new lead was a good 13 seconds over Schumacher. On lap 4, Barrichello’s suspension gave out, and Hakkinen was forced back into the pits from third after his suspension went on lap 5. Wurz’s suspension also went on his way out of Ascari, resulting in several lost spots and another pit stop. An uneventful lap later, Davies won the race.

14th: M. Gene (Minardi): +58.235

16th: E. Irvine (Jaguar): +1:03.276

Constructors' Championship:
1st: Williams - 121
2nd: Ferrari - 74

5th: Benetton - 31
6th: Jordan - 16
7th: Arrows - 13
8th: Sauber - 11
9th: Jaguar - 8

And with the end of the European season, Williams all but seal the constructors’ championship, with Ferrari needing a 1-2 with neither Williams scoring at the next race to stay in the hunt. And with the return of the US GP at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, they have a chance on what should be a level playing field in terms of track knowledge. In the drivers’ championship, Davies can seal it with a win at Indy and have Ralf not score.

United States Grand Prix

Qualifying:

The return of the US GP saw the first time F1 had visited Indianapolis since the Indy 500 had been a part of the championship in the 50s. Now, however, it would race on the infield section, and who should take the pole for the return of Indy? Rhys Davies, looking to seal his first championship. His rivals were Rubens Barrichello, who would start 6th, and Ralf Schumacher, who would start a poor 13th.

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 1:07.322
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +0.711
3rd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +0.733
4th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +0.878
5th: R. Zonta (BAR): +1.330
6th: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): +1.409
7th: A. Wurz (Benetton): +1.661
8th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +1.856
9th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +1.945
10th: J. Verstappen (Arrows): +2.012
11th: M. Salo (Sauber): +2.186
12th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +2.208
13th: R. Schumacher (Williams): +2.431
14th: J. Trulli (Jordan): +2.443
15th: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +2.584
16th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +2.808
17th: J. Alesi (Prost): +3.908
18th: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +3.938
19th: M. Gene (Minardi): +3.960
20th: E. Irvine (Jaguar): +4.030
21st: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +4.520
22nd: S. Jones (Jaguar): +4.952

Race:

Davies led the field through turn 1, with Schumacher close behind. He’d set up the Williams for speed, not grip, and so didn’t start to get away from Schumacher until they’d reached the oval. After two laps, Davies led Schumacher by 2.5 seconds, with Coulthard a distant third and Barrichello running fourth after Hakkinen’s engine started to belch smoke. Then, as they went onto the back straight, Schumacher’s suspension almost collapsed, causing him to slow. Coulthard hit him, but it wasn’t a big collision. This meant that Davies had a 10 second lead at the start of lap 4. Davies pitted at the end of the lap, as did Coulthard and Wurz. This gave the lead to Barrichello, second to Villeneuve and third to Zonta. Davies would also be passed on his way out by Alesi, Heidfeld and Jones, and got a front row seat to the collision of the latter two at turn 1. This meant that Davies was fifth, with all four in front yet to pit. Barrichello, Villeneuve and Alesi all pitted on lap 5, leaving Zonta way out in the lead, some 30 seconds up the road. But the Brazilian would also pit on lap 6, leaving Davies two laps from victory. But there was some good news and bad news to this. The good news was that Barrichello pulled into the pits on lap 7 to retire with engine dramas. The bad news was that Ralf had driven absolutely brilliantly, and had fought his way into second place. This meant that Davies could not seal the championship yet, unless Ralf retired. But he didn’t, and so Davies won the race but Ralf sent the championship to Suzuka.

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 10:02.171
2nd: R. Schumacher (Williams): +15.020
3rd: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +20.531
4th: R. Zonta (BAR): +21.903
5th: J. Verstappen (Arrows): +25.818
6th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +27.036
7th: J. Trulli (Jordan): +36.661
8th: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +37.165
9th: M. Salo (Sauber): +37.482
10th: J. Alesi (Prost): +43.328
11th: E. Irvine (Jaguar): +44.034
12th: M. Gene (Minardi): +47.799
13th: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +48.746
14th: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +49.305
15th: A. Wurz (Benetton): +49.719
16th: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +54.789
17th: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +1:01.866
18th: R. Barrichello (Ferrari): Engine
19th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): Suspension
DNF: D. Coulthard (McLaren): Engine
DNF: S. Jones (Jaguar): Collision
DNF: G. Fisichella (Benetton): Suspension

Drivers' Championship:
1st: R. Davies - 76
2nd: R. Schumacher - 61
3rd: R. Barrichello - 46
4th: M. Hakkinen - 34
5th: M. Schumacher - 28
6th: J. Villeneuve - 26
7th: A. Wurz - 20
8th: D. Coulthard - 19
9th: R. Zonta - 18
10th: H. Frentzen - 14
11th: P. De la Rosa - 12
12th: G. Fisichella - 11
13th: S. Jones - 8
= 14th: M. Salo - 6
= 14th: P. Diniz - 6
16th: J. Verstappen - 3
17th: J. Trulli - 2

Construstors' Championship:
1st: Williams - 137
2nd: Ferrari - 74
3rd: McLaren - 53
4th: BAR - 44
5th: Benetton - 31
6th: Jordan - 16
7th: Arrows - 15
8th: Sauber - 12
9th: Jaguar - 8

So while it would be between Davies and Schumacher at Suzuka, their 1-2 at Indy was easily enough to seal the constructors’ championship for Williams, especially since Ferrari didn’t score. So Williams will have the #1 and #2 next year - or will they?

Japanese Grand Prix

Qualifying:

If Ralf is to send the battle for the championship to Sepang, he needs to win the race, and have Davies finish no better than third. If he finishes second, Davies can’t score at all. If he finishes third, then Davies wins the championship. Simple, eh? But Davies has the upper hand, easily taking pole position while Ralf is stuck in 13th…

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 1:28.765
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +2.344
3rd: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +3.193
4th: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +3.215

18th: N. Heidfeld (Prost): +6.690
19th: M. Gene (Minardi): +6.817
20th: E. Irvine (Jaguar): +6.965
21st: S. Jones (Jaguar): +7.179
22nd: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +7.356

Race:

The skies on race day were ominously black and cloudy, but there was no rain yet, and the entire field opted for slick tyres. Davies led Michael Schumacher through turn 1, and managed to hold the lead throughout the lap, despite some scares at the hairpin and the Spoon. There was some good news from the midfield, as Frentzen had collided with Ralf during an attempted pass at the hairpin. Unfortunately, it didn’t cause him to retire. However, it did drop him to 17th place. When Davies pitted on lap 3, he had a 20 second lead over David Coulthard, who had inherited second when Schumacher pitted the lap before. His in lap was eventful though, as he came to lap Jones and Gene, who had collided at the Spoon and were racing each other at 50km/h, resulting in them going three wide into 130R, with Davies in the middle. It ended well for all involved though, and Davies pitted with no damage. He would emerge still in first, thanks to half the field following him in. Verstappen however stayed out, and found himself right behind Davies. He stopped on lap 4, leaving Davies well in the lead, ahead of Hakkinen, who had jumped Michael in the pits. On lap 5, Davies lapped both Jaguars, both of whom had suspension troubles. Irvine had almost stopped, he was going so slowly, and the Spoon was a bad place to come across him. Predictably, Davies hit him, but it wasn’t a big smash and it didn’t cost him any time. The same couldn’t be said about Irvine, who lost his rear wing. Jones, meanwhile, was much more co-operative, moving over on the back straight. Davies started lap 6, the final lap, 8 seconds ahead of Hakkinen, and managed to increase it to 12 by the end of the lap. And, since Ralf had only finished 6th, his victory meant that Davies had become the 2000 Formula One World Champion in just his second year!

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 9:45.849
2nd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +12.749

First of all I would like to congratulate Mr Davies on his championship win. Secondly have you made plans for the future yet? Right now the smart money is on you signing a 2 year contract extension with Williams but there is word that McLaren could be interested in your services. Could you add any details to that?

Rhys Davies wrote:The future, well, that is interesting. I have yet to receive an official offer from Williams or McLaren for next year, but I am seriously thinking about leaving Williams. My dream has always been winning a world championship with Williams, and now that I have done that, I will probably explore other options.

Malaysian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Somewhat unsurprisingly, Davies took pole by a good second from Michael Schumacher, who vented his frustration at a poor season by smashing into David Coulthard as the latter exited the pits about 10 minutes into the session.

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 1:29.503
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +1.698
3rd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +1.744
4th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +1.927

21st: G. Mazzacane (Minardi): +6.043
22nd: M. Gene (Minardi): +6.607

Race:

There was a fair bit of colliding at turn 1, involving both BARs, both Benettons and Barrichello, among others. However, Davies, Schumacher and Hakkinen got out in front. There was a collision between Davies and Schumacher at turn 8, with Davies managing to hold the lead, and Hakkinen taking second. They continued to do battle over the next two laps, with a margin of just 0.4 seconds separating them at the end of lap 2. Both stopped at the end of lap 3, with Davies emerging barely ahead, and now second since Wurz had continued on. Neither the Williams nor the McLaren had anything resembling grip on cold tyres, and both spun at turn 8, Davies having the advantage since he went 360, while Hakkinen spun into the wall. He had to pit again, so Barrichello now took second and Wurz third, although the two of them collided as the Austrian exited the pits. Unlike Hakkinen, Barrichello was nowhere near the pace of Davies, and lost a second on him every lap. This meant that Davies cruised to another victory, his fourth straight, and a brilliant way to cap off the season.

Constructors' Championship Final Standings:
1st: Williams - 161 (9 wins, 8 2nds, 4 3rds)
2nd: Ferrari - 84 (4 wins, 3 2nds, 5 3rds)
3rd: McLaren - 61 (2 wins, 4 2nds, 1 3rd)
4th: BAR - 47 (1 win, 1 2nd, 4 3rds)

= 10th: Minardi - 0 (4 10ths, 5 11ths, 3 12ths)

And so, with Sepang done, the 2000 season comes to a close. With three offers again, from Williams, McLaren and Ferrari, and spending a good 5 minutes thinking, Davies decided he’d go to a new environment and drive for McLaren in 2001, to defend his title.
